Beyond Fentanyl: Nitazenes, Narcan & One Mother’s Fight to Prevent Overdose.

After losing her youngest son, Marquavies “Quay” Broughton, to nitazene poisoning, Frederica Roberson transformed her grief into a mission to save lives.

In this powerful episode of Conversations with Karen and Cat, Frederica shares Quay’s story and the mission behind the Marquavies Bernard Broughton Foundation. She discusses the growing dangers of nitazenes, fentanyl, and other synthetic opioids; the signs of an opioid overdose; and why access to naloxone (Narcan) and overdose prevention education can save lives.

This important conversation explores substance use, addiction, recovery, youth drug prevention, and the challenges families face when seeking help.

Through advocacy, education, and prevention, Frederica is keeping Quay’s legacy alive while helping families and communities better understand the overdose crisis.

parents fear which was the devastating

00:00:49.405 --> 00:00:52.987
loss of her youngest child marquavius quay

00:00:53.146 --> 00:00:56.569
rotten to nidazine poisoning from that

00:00:56.628 --> 00:01:00.871
loss came a powerful mission turning pain

00:01:00.951 --> 00:01:03.472
into purpose and saving one life at a

Through her foundation,

00:01:06.055 --> 00:01:08.516
Frederica works to educate communities

00:01:08.656 --> 00:01:11.519
about overdose prevention, substance use,

00:01:12.058 --> 00:01:12.819
noxalene,

00:01:12.879 --> 00:01:14.960
and the growing dangers of fentanyl,

00:01:15.301 --> 00:01:18.444
nidazine, and other synthetic drugs.

00:01:18.963 --> 00:01:19.424
Today,

00:01:19.463 --> 00:01:24.188
we welcome Frederica to join us to share

00:01:24.248 --> 00:01:25.147
Quay's story,

00:01:25.629 --> 00:01:27.769
what families need to know about today's

00:01:27.969 --> 00:01:29.131
overdose crisis,

00:01:29.631 --> 00:01:31.753
and how each of us can help save

00:01:31.832 --> 00:01:32.153
a life.

00:01:33.649 --> 00:01:35.490
Thank you and welcome, Frederica.

00:01:36.111 --> 00:01:37.493
Thank you for having me.

00:01:37.554 --> 00:01:39.015
Yes, yes, absolutely.

00:01:39.034 --> 00:01:43.400
Before we get into starting of the

00:01:43.439 --> 00:01:44.421
foundation,

00:01:44.822 --> 00:01:47.846
can you tell us what was Quay like?

00:01:49.703 --> 00:01:51.924
Quay was a burst of energy.

00:01:52.125 --> 00:01:52.665
I mean,

00:01:53.004 --> 00:01:56.126
he never met a stranger and he loved

00:01:56.146 --> 00:01:56.706
to have fun.

00:01:56.745 --> 00:01:58.527
He loved family, faith, and football.

00:01:59.007 --> 00:02:00.927
If all those three years going on,

00:02:01.227 --> 00:02:02.188
he was good.

00:02:02.248 --> 00:02:05.207
He was always dancing, very energetic.

00:02:05.289 --> 00:02:07.929
He loved everybody, especially the kids.

00:02:08.209 --> 00:02:10.469
He was a favorite uncle out of everybody.

00:02:11.050 --> 00:02:13.931
And he just loved family.

00:02:14.140 --> 00:02:17.241
being around family and we do karaoke,

00:02:17.282 --> 00:02:18.643
we dance contests.

00:02:18.663 --> 00:02:19.302
That was us.

00:02:19.323 --> 00:02:28.206
He loves karaoke.

00:02:28.227 --> 00:02:28.306
Yes.

00:02:29.108 --> 00:02:33.150
No, none of us did, but we, we,

00:02:33.189 --> 00:02:37.531
we were singing go to song on karaoke.

00:02:38.472 --> 00:02:38.512
Um,

00:02:40.401 --> 00:02:43.484
what was it it was um it's one

00:02:43.524 --> 00:02:45.085
of them old school songs he don't hurt

00:02:45.125 --> 00:02:48.826
me singing i was born

00:02:57.597 --> 00:03:01.139
and another song that we sung together was

00:03:01.180 --> 00:03:05.322
we gonna stand up take my people with

00:03:05.361 --> 00:03:09.504
me together we are going that was it

00:03:09.564 --> 00:03:10.846
right there the whole family even the

00:03:10.866 --> 00:03:16.330
grandkids yeah that's beautiful can you

00:03:16.349 --> 00:03:19.512
take us back to April first twenty twenty

00:03:19.551 --> 00:03:21.312
five okay

00:03:22.175 --> 00:03:24.538
your life changed forever what happened

00:03:24.558 --> 00:03:26.921
and how did you get that news well

00:03:27.302 --> 00:03:29.064
i want to back up to the day

00:03:29.104 --> 00:03:32.729
before okay okay so quay had an addiction

00:03:33.530 --> 00:03:35.633
um he had played football and had an

00:03:35.733 --> 00:03:36.054
injury

00:03:36.819 --> 00:03:38.920
They were feeding him Percocets.

00:03:39.140 --> 00:03:41.360
When he couldn't get them from the doctor

00:03:41.381 --> 00:03:42.741
anymore, he went to the street.

00:03:42.822 --> 00:03:44.602
So he battled this addiction.

00:03:45.323 --> 00:03:47.402
And prior to three months,

00:03:47.443 --> 00:03:48.343
he had been clean.

00:03:48.783 --> 00:03:51.144
But he had cut his finger almost off

00:03:51.204 --> 00:03:51.884
on a blender,

00:03:52.085 --> 00:03:53.324
doing something Quay would do,

00:03:53.425 --> 00:03:54.284
stuck his finger in there,

00:03:54.324 --> 00:03:55.306
told him he wanted to see if the

00:03:55.346 --> 00:03:55.825
button worked.

00:03:56.485 --> 00:04:00.967
well it cut his finger and he had

00:04:01.026 --> 00:04:03.587
surgery on it but through that he would

00:04:03.647 --> 00:04:05.527
say that um mama i don't want no

00:04:05.568 --> 00:04:07.929
pain medicines he went through everything

00:04:07.968 --> 00:04:09.810
the surgery everything with no pain

00:04:09.830 --> 00:04:12.431
medicine the day before he passed away we

00:04:12.471 --> 00:04:14.512
went into the plastic surgeon office and

00:04:14.572 --> 00:04:16.072
he had a pen sticking out of his

00:04:16.112 --> 00:04:18.612
finger to hold that bone in place after

00:04:18.632 --> 00:04:20.853
the surgery and i remember walking out

00:04:20.874 --> 00:04:22.735
that door and i remember quay telling me

00:04:22.795 --> 00:04:23.095
mama

00:04:23.774 --> 00:04:26.016
I got a craving and I've called eighteen

00:04:26.057 --> 00:04:29.459
places and they tell us our insurance is

00:04:29.579 --> 00:04:30.220
out of network.

00:04:30.279 --> 00:04:32.240
I need ten thousand dollars.

00:04:32.302 --> 00:04:34.182
And I said, keep calling, keep calling.

00:04:34.223 --> 00:04:35.764
Somebody going to say yes.

00:04:35.803 --> 00:04:36.845
About four o'clock,

00:04:36.904 --> 00:04:39.786
he found this place in Ackworth and they

00:04:39.826 --> 00:04:40.288
told him, well,

00:04:40.307 --> 00:04:41.788
if you can get here by five o'clock,

00:04:42.608 --> 00:04:44.310
then we can do your detox.

00:04:44.350 --> 00:04:45.672
And he was like, I don't need detox.

00:04:45.771 --> 00:04:46.572
I just got a craving.

00:04:46.632 --> 00:04:48.012
I have no drugs in my system.

00:04:48.033 --> 00:04:48.494
They say, well,

00:04:48.514 --> 00:04:50.774
we'll schedule an appointment April first

00:04:50.795 --> 00:04:51.396
at ten a.m.

00:04:53.694 --> 00:04:55.156
And so throughout the night,

00:04:56.216 --> 00:04:58.976
he had satisfied that craving where two

00:04:59.016 --> 00:05:01.338
young ladies he knew sent him a pill

00:05:02.017 --> 00:05:03.077
via Uber courier.

00:05:04.098 --> 00:05:06.879
So it was delivered to my house in

00:05:06.920 --> 00:05:07.699
a book bag.

00:05:09.600 --> 00:05:12.502
And not one delivery, but two deliveries,

00:05:12.682 --> 00:05:14.463
one at eleven o'clock and one at two,

00:05:14.562 --> 00:05:15.403
some in the morning.

00:05:16.523 --> 00:05:19.144
And I have a Yorkie and very demanding

00:05:19.204 --> 00:05:20.004
at seven twenty.

00:05:20.704 --> 00:05:22.086
He yapping talking about I got to go

00:05:22.105 --> 00:05:22.807
to the bathroom.

00:05:22.846 --> 00:05:24.507
So I went to take him out to

00:05:24.547 --> 00:05:25.288
the bathroom.

00:05:26.007 --> 00:05:27.348
And when we came back in, I said,

00:05:27.709 --> 00:05:28.949
let me check Quay room.

00:05:29.110 --> 00:05:31.011
Some told me to check Quay's room.

00:05:31.992 --> 00:05:32.791
And when I went in there,

00:05:32.812 --> 00:05:34.233
he was laying back on his bed.

00:05:35.165 --> 00:05:36.425
but something didn't look right.

00:05:36.946 --> 00:05:37.846
Something didn't look right.

00:05:37.867 --> 00:05:38.627
And I was like, Quay,

00:05:38.987 --> 00:05:40.369
Quay called his name a couple of times

00:05:40.389 --> 00:05:41.269
and I jumped on him.

00:05:41.288 --> 00:05:42.089
I was like, Quay.

00:05:42.711 --> 00:05:43.870
And I felt for a pulse.

00:05:43.891 --> 00:05:44.771
He had a pulse.

00:05:45.091 --> 00:05:46.512
And I said, Lord, no, no.

00:05:47.314 --> 00:05:48.314
I called nine one one.

00:05:48.735 --> 00:05:49.995
And after I called nine one one,

00:05:50.136 --> 00:05:51.896
I administered a Narcan.

00:05:52.718 --> 00:05:54.238
And at that moment, he,

00:05:54.798 --> 00:05:57.240
I started doing CPR and I was able

00:05:57.261 --> 00:05:58.521
to sweep his mouth and he had some

00:05:58.562 --> 00:05:59.021
grapes.

00:05:59.442 --> 00:06:00.843
And so those grapes came out.

00:06:01.403 --> 00:06:02.084
And so I,

00:06:03.254 --> 00:06:05.435
I got two grapes out and I'm still

00:06:05.454 --> 00:06:05.814
going.

00:06:05.855 --> 00:06:07.036
He's gasping for air.

00:06:07.076 --> 00:06:08.497
I hit him with another Narcan.

00:06:09.036 --> 00:06:10.137
He's gasping for air.

00:06:10.317 --> 00:06:12.838
And then Quay looked at me.

00:06:13.519 --> 00:06:14.579
He turned his head,

00:06:14.899 --> 00:06:16.000
laid it in my hand.

00:06:16.220 --> 00:06:18.040
A tear came out and he took his

00:06:18.120 --> 00:06:18.781
last breath.

00:06:18.802 --> 00:06:21.882
I'm so sorry.

00:06:22.562 --> 00:06:23.043
Yeah.

00:06:23.103 --> 00:06:25.785
So at seven fifty seven, he was gone.

00:06:25.805 --> 00:06:27.305
He was gone.

00:06:27.925 --> 00:06:28.165
Yeah.

00:06:28.206 --> 00:06:31.987
So the drug that

00:06:33.343 --> 00:06:34.122
he had taken.

00:06:35.665 --> 00:06:41.529
I had never heard of... Nitazine.

00:06:41.629 --> 00:06:43.091
I had never heard of nitazine.

00:06:43.632 --> 00:06:46.173
When I looked it up for our conversation,

00:06:46.834 --> 00:06:48.735
I learned that it's more power than

00:06:49.057 --> 00:06:49.596
fentanyl.

00:06:50.697 --> 00:06:55.682
Tell us about nitazine and what we need

00:06:55.723 --> 00:06:57.884
to make people aware of how

00:06:58.894 --> 00:07:01.654
available that that even that class of

00:07:01.714 --> 00:07:03.814
synthetic opioids is.

00:07:04.415 --> 00:07:06.456
So nitazines was introduced in the

00:07:06.516 --> 00:07:09.197
nineteen fifties and sixties to the FDA.

00:07:09.757 --> 00:07:10.536
And at that time,

00:07:10.576 --> 00:07:11.737
when they were doing the studies,

00:07:11.778 --> 00:07:13.798
they were inject the mice and the mice

00:07:13.838 --> 00:07:14.338
were dying.

00:07:14.718 --> 00:07:16.918
So the FDA shot it down because it

00:07:16.959 --> 00:07:19.160
was too strong and powerful for pain

00:07:19.199 --> 00:07:20.439
medicine or for anybody.

00:07:20.480 --> 00:07:22.279
So it wasn't for human consumption.

00:07:23.081 --> 00:07:23.500
And so

00:07:24.730 --> 00:07:27.891
It's still utilized over in the UK and

00:07:27.930 --> 00:07:28.411
China.

00:07:28.511 --> 00:07:30.430
So some kind of way it's done found

00:07:30.511 --> 00:07:31.971
its way to the United States.

00:07:33.572 --> 00:07:35.531
If there's any drug in the world,

00:07:36.732 --> 00:07:37.651
it's going to find its way.

00:07:38.312 --> 00:07:38.971
Absolutely.

00:07:39.252 --> 00:07:39.593
Yeah.

00:07:40.333 --> 00:07:44.012
And so back in twenty nineteen is when

00:07:44.052 --> 00:07:45.634
they first started appearing.

00:07:45.834 --> 00:07:46.774
And I think it was more in the

00:07:46.834 --> 00:07:47.774
Philly area.

00:07:48.553 --> 00:07:51.675
And then fentanyl numbers just went to the

00:07:51.754 --> 00:07:52.154
roof.

00:07:52.894 --> 00:07:53.254
Well,

00:07:55.117 --> 00:07:57.879
When Dr. Terry called me, she stated,

00:07:57.959 --> 00:07:58.538
she was like,

00:07:58.619 --> 00:08:00.420
I think this is a fentanyl overdose,

00:08:00.480 --> 00:08:02.161
but do you mind if I send his

00:08:02.201 --> 00:08:05.963
bodily fluids over to the UBI?

00:08:06.004 --> 00:08:06.785
Just to interrupt you,

00:08:06.805 --> 00:08:08.745
for those who are not aware, Dr.

00:08:08.826 --> 00:08:11.827
Terry is the medical examiner in Gwinnett

00:08:11.908 --> 00:08:12.329
County.

00:08:12.908 --> 00:08:18.211
And so because your son did not die

00:08:18.232 --> 00:08:19.653
of like an illness or something,

00:08:19.673 --> 00:08:21.975
an autopsy would have been performed,

00:08:21.995 --> 00:08:23.855
which is why his body would have gone

00:08:23.915 --> 00:08:24.817
to her office.

00:08:25.507 --> 00:08:26.007
Yes.

00:08:27.127 --> 00:08:28.848
And so she sent it off to the

00:08:28.889 --> 00:08:31.690
GBI, who then sent it off,

00:08:32.150 --> 00:08:33.371
outsourced it out of state.

00:08:34.373 --> 00:08:36.234
It wasn't until four months later when I'm

00:08:36.254 --> 00:08:37.835
in the courtroom with the two young ladies

00:08:37.875 --> 00:08:39.596
that they arrested for this drug,

00:08:39.916 --> 00:08:40.956
for sending the drug,

00:08:41.517 --> 00:08:43.177
that I found out it was nitazine.

00:08:44.359 --> 00:08:46.299
And the thing about nitazines,

00:08:46.480 --> 00:08:47.740
they have a law for fentanyl.

00:08:47.780 --> 00:08:49.861
If you give somebody fentanyl,

00:08:50.602 --> 00:08:51.864
they have Austin's law,

00:08:52.063 --> 00:08:53.264
minimum of twenty five years.

00:08:54.331 --> 00:08:54.451
Well,

00:08:54.471 --> 00:08:55.894
they couldn't charge these young ladies

00:08:55.933 --> 00:08:57.436
with that, Austin's law,

00:08:57.475 --> 00:08:58.658
because it's specific.

00:08:59.538 --> 00:09:01.640
It says fentanyl, and that's it.

00:09:02.461 --> 00:09:06.847
And so Madam DA's office then took it

00:09:06.888 --> 00:09:09.792
to the grand jury for a felony murder

00:09:09.831 --> 00:09:10.292
charge.

00:09:10.511 --> 00:09:10.773
Okay.

00:09:11.721 --> 00:09:13.981
But that was how I came to find

00:09:14.101 --> 00:09:15.363
out about this drug.

00:09:15.783 --> 00:09:18.124
And it's amazing because Tom Branch from

00:09:18.504 --> 00:09:20.865
GNR Health had kind of took me under

00:09:20.904 --> 00:09:22.725
his wings and was giving me the reports

00:09:22.785 --> 00:09:24.746
of everything, the overdoses,

00:09:26.107 --> 00:09:28.528
the ones that's been saved with Narcan.

00:09:29.129 --> 00:09:31.029
And I remember two weeks prior to this,

00:09:31.630 --> 00:09:32.551
Tom Branch saying, well,

00:09:32.571 --> 00:09:33.751
we just had our first

00:09:34.880 --> 00:09:37.682
fatal death of nidazine so i started doing

00:09:37.743 --> 00:09:40.224
research about nidazine putting it out on

00:09:40.245 --> 00:09:42.966
my social media page and to find out

00:09:43.767 --> 00:09:49.470
that first death was my son wow so

00:09:49.971 --> 00:09:51.491
he hadn't even made that connection when

00:09:51.511 --> 00:09:53.312
he was telling you about it nope

00:09:54.884 --> 00:09:55.644
Not at all.

00:09:56.304 --> 00:09:56.465
So,

00:09:56.524 --> 00:09:58.306
it's twenty-one different types of

00:09:58.365 --> 00:09:59.506
nitazines out there.

00:09:59.927 --> 00:10:00.246
Okay.

00:10:00.346 --> 00:10:02.989
And they range from ten to a hundred

00:10:03.028 --> 00:10:04.809
times stronger than more, I mean,

00:10:04.850 --> 00:10:05.650
than fentanyl.

00:10:05.931 --> 00:10:06.971
Oh, my God.

00:10:07.150 --> 00:10:09.873
And fentanyl was what we thought was the

00:10:09.913 --> 00:10:11.594
most powerful opioid around.

00:10:11.634 --> 00:10:12.855
Exactly.

00:10:12.875 --> 00:10:14.916
Yeah.

00:10:15.476 --> 00:10:17.337
Can you say the doses?

00:10:17.457 --> 00:10:20.679
I know when we had a previous guest

00:10:20.740 --> 00:10:22.201
and we were talking about the fentanyl

00:10:22.240 --> 00:10:24.381
crisis and they showed

00:10:24.803 --> 00:10:27.565
Somewhere like smaller than a dime size.

00:10:28.264 --> 00:10:32.267
Actually, it's this pencil tip.

00:10:33.427 --> 00:10:35.967
Oh, wow.

00:10:35.988 --> 00:10:38.249
It's pretty potent.

00:10:38.269 --> 00:10:41.809
A small bit can kill you.

00:10:41.990 --> 00:10:44.850
Four grains of salt can kill you.

00:10:46.788 --> 00:10:49.152
There was an officer in Gwinnett County a

00:10:49.211 --> 00:10:53.979
few years ago that handled the fentanyl.

00:10:54.639 --> 00:10:56.722
And he handled it.

00:10:57.102 --> 00:10:58.164
I don't remember if he had on,

00:10:58.284 --> 00:10:59.647
but when he handled it,

00:10:59.706 --> 00:11:02.350
he wasn't aware that whatever the thing

00:11:02.390 --> 00:11:03.812
was that he picked up.

00:11:03.952 --> 00:11:06.335
had had fentanyl on it and he ended

00:11:06.375 --> 00:11:08.296
up getting sick and they had to give

00:11:08.336 --> 00:11:08.917
him Narcan.

00:11:08.956 --> 00:11:12.178
They ended up charging the person who the

00:11:12.219 --> 00:11:15.240
police went there to say because the

00:11:15.400 --> 00:11:18.964
officer ended up becoming ill because of

00:11:19.303 --> 00:11:22.005
just his contact with fentanyl.

00:11:22.326 --> 00:11:25.227
And this is anywhere from ten to a

00:11:25.307 --> 00:11:27.570
hundred times more potent than

00:11:28.049 --> 00:11:31.432
than more than fentanyl and quade died of

00:11:31.672 --> 00:11:34.594
isonitazine which is forty times stronger

00:11:34.614 --> 00:11:36.654
than fentanyl eight hundred times stronger

00:11:36.674 --> 00:11:39.115
than morphine now give me that name again

00:11:39.855 --> 00:11:43.778
isonitazine isonitazine i've never heard

00:11:43.837 --> 00:11:46.720
of any of these no and

00:11:47.489 --> 00:11:48.149
The thing about it,

00:11:48.168 --> 00:11:51.451
the DA is starting to do a little

00:11:51.491 --> 00:11:52.732
bit more research.

00:11:52.773 --> 00:11:55.114
They're actually compensating a little bit

00:11:55.193 --> 00:11:56.815
more now that they know about it.

00:11:57.355 --> 00:12:00.957
But the problem is nobody can test for

00:12:00.998 --> 00:12:01.778
it here in Georgia.

00:12:01.918 --> 00:12:02.759
That's a problem.

00:12:03.679 --> 00:12:06.121
Because how many more fentanyl cases

00:12:07.062 --> 00:12:08.602
that they're just labeled as fentanyl and

00:12:08.822 --> 00:12:10.144
it's actually the nitrogen.

00:12:11.404 --> 00:12:12.686
So the numbers ain't right.

00:12:12.785 --> 00:12:14.606
And can't nobody convince me that the

00:12:14.647 --> 00:12:15.368
numbers are right.

00:12:15.668 --> 00:12:17.089
Thank God for Dr. Terry.

00:12:17.149 --> 00:12:19.791
But when the fentanyl first hit the scene,

00:12:19.850 --> 00:12:20.130
Dr.

00:12:20.171 --> 00:12:22.373
Terry was the one under ones who broke

00:12:22.393 --> 00:12:23.072
that as well.

00:12:24.453 --> 00:12:28.756
And so you took this incredible loss.

00:12:28.837 --> 00:12:30.599
Like, I don't even know.

00:12:31.453 --> 00:12:33.654
I don't even know how you were able

00:12:33.715 --> 00:12:34.035
to,

00:12:34.655 --> 00:12:38.197
but you took this loss and you created

00:12:38.258 --> 00:12:39.438
this organization.

00:12:39.479 --> 00:12:42.480
So tell us about this organization that

00:12:42.500 --> 00:12:43.922
you've named after your child.

00:12:44.628 --> 00:12:45.609
Well, you know,

00:12:45.708 --> 00:12:48.971
it's amazing because I remember speaking

00:12:49.011 --> 00:12:51.433
at Quay's funeral on April the eleventh

00:12:52.094 --> 00:12:53.414
and I got up and I spoke to

00:12:53.514 --> 00:12:54.395
everyone and I said,

00:12:54.416 --> 00:12:55.677
we're going to cry today,

00:12:56.197 --> 00:12:57.337
but we're going to put boots on the

00:12:57.357 --> 00:13:00.841
ground because we I do not want to

00:13:00.900 --> 00:13:05.605
see another mother feel the pain that I

00:13:05.644 --> 00:13:06.265
have felt.

00:13:07.365 --> 00:13:09.628
God gave me comfort in this because when

00:13:09.648 --> 00:13:11.370
they roll Quay out of my house,

00:13:12.230 --> 00:13:14.192
a sparrow start hitting my window.

00:13:15.798 --> 00:13:18.501
that sparrow hit my window for thirty

00:13:18.741 --> 00:13:21.946
eight days straight at seven fifty seven

00:13:22.125 --> 00:13:22.505
a.m.

00:13:22.566 --> 00:13:24.828
And I would record it every day on

00:13:24.889 --> 00:13:25.649
Facebook.

00:13:26.390 --> 00:13:29.173
And I knew then this is it.

00:13:29.953 --> 00:13:30.115
And

00:13:31.283 --> 00:13:32.224
You know, you don't understand.

00:13:32.264 --> 00:13:34.826
God has been already giving you the work

00:13:35.186 --> 00:13:36.326
and not even knowing it.

00:13:36.826 --> 00:13:38.467
I was in school for a bachelor's in

00:13:38.508 --> 00:13:39.889
science and equine studies.

00:13:40.068 --> 00:13:42.130
And that December prior,

00:13:42.471 --> 00:13:44.932
my project was to form a five oh

00:13:45.052 --> 00:13:45.634
one C three.

00:13:45.693 --> 00:13:50.177
And it was called finding strength through

00:13:50.197 --> 00:13:52.138
the storms.

00:13:52.278 --> 00:13:55.059
And so speaking over quite a day,

00:13:55.581 --> 00:13:56.902
God gave me that vision.

00:13:58.234 --> 00:14:00.673
The vision is the Marquavius Bernard

00:14:00.693 --> 00:14:01.595
Broughton Foundation.

00:14:01.615 --> 00:14:02.735
You take that name off.

00:14:02.774 --> 00:14:04.774
And I took that and submitted the same

00:14:04.815 --> 00:14:06.936
paperwork that I turned in as a paper

00:14:07.015 --> 00:14:08.336
and got a ninety eight on.

00:14:08.696 --> 00:14:09.035
Yeah.

00:14:09.475 --> 00:14:10.995
And here we are,

00:14:11.035 --> 00:14:12.416
the Marquavius Bernard Broughton

00:14:12.456 --> 00:14:13.136
Foundation.

00:14:13.197 --> 00:14:15.437
And we submitted it on September the

00:14:15.476 --> 00:14:16.037
thirtieth.

00:14:17.037 --> 00:14:18.618
On October the first,

00:14:18.937 --> 00:14:21.138
we had a government shutdown.

00:14:21.177 --> 00:14:22.577
That department was shut down.

00:14:22.998 --> 00:14:24.558
But on October the fourteenth,

00:14:24.798 --> 00:14:26.759
I received my five oh one C three.

00:14:28.869 --> 00:14:31.450
listen when I say it's boots on the

00:14:31.470 --> 00:14:33.791
ground I'm in every room I'm setting up

00:14:33.831 --> 00:14:37.032
tables everywhere I'm educating people on

00:14:37.211 --> 00:14:39.873
Narcan on the new drugs that are out

00:14:39.893 --> 00:14:41.573
there because it's not just nitazine you

00:14:41.614 --> 00:14:44.294
got the metatopidine you got the xylosine

00:14:44.335 --> 00:14:46.456
so as quick as we are learning about

00:14:46.495 --> 00:14:50.138
things it's new it's emerging that's

00:14:50.177 --> 00:14:55.500
what's scary yes you have a powerful you

00:14:55.539 --> 00:14:56.620
have a powerful quote

00:14:57.782 --> 00:14:58.804
on your website,

00:14:59.506 --> 00:15:02.533
turning pain into purpose by educating

00:15:02.714 --> 00:15:05.480
others about the devastating effects of

00:15:05.600 --> 00:15:06.583
substance abuse.

00:15:07.053 --> 00:15:09.894
And empowering communities to take action.

00:15:10.254 --> 00:15:10.735
That's it.

00:15:10.755 --> 00:15:11.936
That's very powerful.

00:15:12.235 --> 00:15:13.476
It's all about the action.

00:15:13.496 --> 00:15:14.878
We can talk about it all day,

00:15:14.898 --> 00:15:17.198
but action moves may bring a movement.

00:15:17.278 --> 00:15:19.139
And that's what I tend to do here

00:15:19.159 --> 00:15:22.301
in Georgia, New York, Washington, D.C.,

00:15:22.721 --> 00:15:23.201
Florida.

00:15:23.441 --> 00:15:24.942
Those are all the states where I have

00:15:24.981 --> 00:15:25.962
taken this to.

00:15:26.582 --> 00:15:29.403
I go next week to Tennessee and speak

00:15:29.864 --> 00:15:31.184
in Knoxville, Tennessee.

00:15:31.926 --> 00:15:32.866
This is something,

00:15:33.567 --> 00:15:36.070
this foundation is now how I hear Quay's

00:15:36.110 --> 00:15:36.551
heartbeat.

00:15:37.091 --> 00:15:38.251
And it's going to be loud.

00:15:39.413 --> 00:15:41.816
So the purpose of the foundation is

00:15:41.995 --> 00:15:43.597
education and awareness.

00:15:43.957 --> 00:15:47.020
Education, awareness, advocating,

00:15:47.181 --> 00:15:49.803
and sitting with grieving families.

00:15:49.884 --> 00:15:50.644
My God.

00:15:51.072 --> 00:15:52.432
Can you talk about a couple of the

00:15:52.471 --> 00:15:54.552
programs that you offer?

00:15:54.712 --> 00:15:57.234
I see you have a Quay project.

00:15:57.413 --> 00:15:58.354
Am I saying that right?

00:15:58.433 --> 00:15:59.815
And a Mark program.

00:16:00.215 --> 00:16:02.615
So the Quay project is in action.

00:16:02.635 --> 00:16:04.336
That's me going out,

00:16:04.576 --> 00:16:05.777
educating the community.

00:16:06.376 --> 00:16:08.177
doing the vendor tables we do a

00:16:08.238 --> 00:16:10.279
partnership for purpose we did a five k

00:16:10.320 --> 00:16:13.741
this year which was our first annual where

00:16:14.062 --> 00:16:16.705
um commissioner jasper did a proclamation

00:16:16.745 --> 00:16:18.505
where made that day partnership for

00:16:18.546 --> 00:16:20.466
purpose day and that was april the

00:16:20.527 --> 00:16:22.708
eleventh all that falls under the quays

00:16:22.749 --> 00:16:29.094
project and so it's um storytelling um

00:16:29.923 --> 00:16:33.207
is part of the praise project we are

00:16:33.307 --> 00:16:36.110
working on so that mark project he spoke

00:16:36.130 --> 00:16:39.594
about that's my long-term goal and my

00:16:39.653 --> 00:16:42.096
long-term goal god gave me a vision of

00:16:42.136 --> 00:16:43.859
forty four acres five years ago when i

00:16:43.879 --> 00:16:46.642
had bone cancer i beat that bone cancer

00:16:46.662 --> 00:16:48.844
i didn't understand what forty four acres

00:16:49.004 --> 00:16:49.345
was

00:16:49.784 --> 00:16:51.366
That's why I was back in school for

00:16:51.386 --> 00:16:53.190
a bachelor's in science and equine

00:16:53.210 --> 00:16:53.549
studies.

00:16:53.590 --> 00:16:54.711
Cause I thought I was supposed to have

00:16:54.731 --> 00:16:58.677
a equine assisted therapy for trauma

00:16:58.716 --> 00:17:00.259
veterans and mental health.

00:17:01.019 --> 00:17:03.523
Well, when I graduated, um,

00:17:04.284 --> 00:17:05.806
I learned so much more,

00:17:06.526 --> 00:17:08.689
but it's a mental health component to all

00:17:08.729 --> 00:17:09.209
of this.

00:17:09.849 --> 00:17:12.211
And so Quay was not able to get

00:17:12.251 --> 00:17:12.692
in a place.

00:17:12.732 --> 00:17:13.532
It was about money.

00:17:13.834 --> 00:17:15.035
So this forty four acres,

00:17:15.154 --> 00:17:17.396
I want to build a section of it

00:17:17.497 --> 00:17:19.479
to have an equine assistant therapy for

00:17:19.538 --> 00:17:21.902
mental health, trauma and veterans.

00:17:22.651 --> 00:17:24.672
And then I want a detox center.

00:17:25.673 --> 00:17:28.474
I want a recovery treatment home on that

00:17:28.634 --> 00:17:30.836
property where they can get the one year

00:17:30.875 --> 00:17:31.777
long term goal.

00:17:31.836 --> 00:17:34.159
But I also would like to place twenty

00:17:34.318 --> 00:17:36.140
one tiny homes on that property.

00:17:37.130 --> 00:17:39.092
because we don't want to send them back

00:17:39.112 --> 00:17:39.612
to the streets.

00:17:39.652 --> 00:17:40.712
We want to send them back to their

00:17:40.792 --> 00:17:42.634
own place and teach them how to live

00:17:42.733 --> 00:17:44.756
in society by educating,

00:17:44.816 --> 00:17:45.997
showing them how to write checks.

00:17:46.096 --> 00:17:47.117
A lot of them don't even know how

00:17:47.137 --> 00:17:47.958
to manage money,

00:17:48.077 --> 00:17:49.920
make sure all these programs is there.

00:17:50.500 --> 00:17:52.582
And so the mark project is Quay leaving

00:17:52.642 --> 00:17:53.923
his mark on the world.

00:17:57.705 --> 00:17:58.926
And I love how you're going to,

00:17:58.987 --> 00:18:02.269
you're thinking ahead because when people

00:18:02.990 --> 00:18:03.890
have to, when they,

00:18:03.950 --> 00:18:05.932
when they are working to get off drugs,

00:18:06.584 --> 00:18:08.545
then you go back into society and you're

00:18:08.585 --> 00:18:11.006
not strong enough or may not be strong

00:18:11.066 --> 00:18:14.208
enough because all of the mess is still

00:18:14.228 --> 00:18:14.528
there.

00:18:15.127 --> 00:18:17.169
And most people have to literally pick up

00:18:17.209 --> 00:18:19.890
and relocate because when you go to a

00:18:19.910 --> 00:18:20.990
brand new spot,

00:18:21.151 --> 00:18:22.471
you don't know where all the stuff is.

00:18:22.491 --> 00:18:23.571
You got to seek it out.

00:18:23.852 --> 00:18:24.573
That's right.

00:18:24.653 --> 00:18:26.252
So it's good that you're thinking about

00:18:26.272 --> 00:18:26.573
that.

00:18:26.593 --> 00:18:27.253
Um,

00:18:29.816 --> 00:18:30.116
Yes.

00:18:31.698 --> 00:18:33.400
The twenty one tiny home.

00:18:33.460 --> 00:18:36.702
So my consultant that has helped me with

00:18:36.742 --> 00:18:40.446
the foundation and all the back end

00:18:40.487 --> 00:18:41.587
paperwork and everything.

00:18:41.989 --> 00:18:44.490
She actually knows the maker,

00:18:45.031 --> 00:18:50.798
the inventor of the tiny home.

00:18:51.397 --> 00:18:51.598
Don't.

00:18:52.454 --> 00:18:54.816
He's willing to donate twenty one tiny

00:18:54.855 --> 00:18:56.936
homes to that land.

00:18:56.977 --> 00:18:59.117
So when the land comes in,

00:18:59.397 --> 00:19:01.638
I really wanted in Gwinnett County because

00:19:01.898 --> 00:19:03.559
Gwinnett County don't have any places.

00:19:03.619 --> 00:19:05.201
When we made those phone calls,

00:19:05.740 --> 00:19:07.701
they were all outside of Gwinnett County.

00:19:07.741 --> 00:19:08.643
And that's a problem.

00:19:09.403 --> 00:19:11.604
It's a problem because it's heavily in

00:19:11.644 --> 00:19:12.403
Gwinnett County.

00:19:13.164 --> 00:19:16.926
So how can our listeners support your

00:19:17.027 --> 00:19:17.606
vision?

00:19:18.722 --> 00:19:24.627
So if on the website, mbbfoundation.org,

00:19:24.788 --> 00:19:26.490
it's a place where to donate.

00:19:26.990 --> 00:19:28.632
And when you hit that donate tab,

00:19:28.692 --> 00:19:31.795
it takes you to Givelify,

00:19:32.455 --> 00:19:35.077
which is different projects.

00:19:35.117 --> 00:19:36.519
All the projects is on there.

00:19:36.578 --> 00:19:37.840
We got one up and coming.

00:19:37.921 --> 00:19:39.021
It's the Koi way.

00:19:39.682 --> 00:19:40.462
One...

00:19:40.942 --> 00:19:42.303
One conversation at a time,

00:19:42.403 --> 00:19:43.343
one mile at a time.

00:19:43.383 --> 00:19:45.703
We had a billboard for the whole month

00:19:45.723 --> 00:19:48.663
of August up on Lawrenceville Highway to

00:19:48.784 --> 00:19:50.045
promote the Quayway.

00:19:50.105 --> 00:19:52.444
But we're going to start doing car shows

00:19:52.924 --> 00:19:54.904
because that'll bring out people.

00:19:55.165 --> 00:19:55.506
You know,

00:19:55.546 --> 00:19:57.006
the cars will bring the people out where

00:19:57.026 --> 00:19:58.246
we can educate them.

00:19:58.705 --> 00:20:01.767
And so we're starting on the Quayway

00:20:01.826 --> 00:20:02.586
campaign.

00:20:03.146 --> 00:20:05.626
And that's going to be like one of

00:20:05.666 --> 00:20:09.087
our signatures because it'll be the...

00:20:10.318 --> 00:20:12.079
what do you call it, the car shows,

00:20:12.440 --> 00:20:14.701
but also we'll have where we'll go in

00:20:14.741 --> 00:20:16.603
and speak in schools, the Quayway,

00:20:17.182 --> 00:20:18.203
educating them.

00:20:18.564 --> 00:20:20.325
And then also I'm looking,

00:20:20.345 --> 00:20:22.685
I'm going to talk to Ry Gwinnett and

00:20:22.766 --> 00:20:25.807
see can I get the Quayway campaign in

00:20:26.749 --> 00:20:29.069
on the bus system so it can show

00:20:29.210 --> 00:20:32.612
advertising and educational things about

00:20:32.652 --> 00:20:34.452
the different drugs that is coming on.

00:20:34.893 --> 00:20:36.713
And I also would like to wrap a

00:20:36.753 --> 00:20:38.694
bus with a...

00:20:40.140 --> 00:20:43.320
message a message a message with some

00:20:43.441 --> 00:20:46.022
education behind it and quay's face so you

00:20:46.063 --> 00:20:48.463
can see this is a real person so

00:20:48.483 --> 00:20:51.984
i i just proposed to the nfl the

00:20:52.025 --> 00:20:56.886
koiway campaign so fingers crossed listen

00:20:56.987 --> 00:21:00.068
i i was just in new york last

00:21:00.128 --> 00:21:03.529
week um for facing fentanyl and i stood

00:21:03.569 --> 00:21:06.491
in times square and spoke to parents you

00:21:06.531 --> 00:21:06.751
know

00:21:07.818 --> 00:21:11.284
in reference to fentanyl and nitazines,

00:21:11.785 --> 00:21:15.410
but I also stood with over two thousand

00:21:15.430 --> 00:21:18.334
families who's lost somebody and Quaid was

00:21:18.394 --> 00:21:19.675
on the billboard in Times Square.

00:21:21.446 --> 00:21:21.846
I talk.

00:21:22.626 --> 00:21:24.709
Wanda Wiggins takes me everywhere with

00:21:24.749 --> 00:21:25.009
her.

00:21:25.148 --> 00:21:26.549
I speak everywhere she goes.

00:21:26.589 --> 00:21:28.111
She's like, come on, I'm coming.

00:21:28.672 --> 00:21:29.291
One thing about it,

00:21:29.332 --> 00:21:30.712
this has become my passion,

00:21:31.093 --> 00:21:32.413
but it's also my purpose.

00:21:32.575 --> 00:21:32.914
You know,

00:21:33.335 --> 00:21:35.115
you think you've been found your purpose

00:21:35.175 --> 00:21:35.656
in life.

00:21:36.136 --> 00:21:36.778
This is it.

00:21:37.038 --> 00:21:40.019
And today is a prime example.

00:21:40.279 --> 00:21:41.181
Just this morning.

00:21:42.153 --> 00:21:42.893
On my way to work,

00:21:42.992 --> 00:21:44.894
I'm a practice manager of a dermatology

00:21:44.973 --> 00:21:45.374
office.

00:21:46.095 --> 00:21:47.555
And I get a phone call from my

00:21:47.654 --> 00:21:50.036
office stating one of my employees

00:21:50.135 --> 00:21:50.737
overdosed.

00:21:51.517 --> 00:21:53.097
Oh, my gosh.

00:21:53.117 --> 00:21:54.018
She hit the floor.

00:21:54.637 --> 00:21:57.799
I have equipped my office and trained my

00:21:57.920 --> 00:21:58.380
office.

00:21:58.960 --> 00:22:00.580
They hit her with two Narcans.

00:22:01.876 --> 00:22:03.357
And then they hit her with the IM

00:22:03.698 --> 00:22:04.739
and brought her back.

00:22:04.999 --> 00:22:07.441
So Quay is still saving lives,

00:22:07.621 --> 00:22:09.682
one life at a time.

00:22:10.522 --> 00:22:12.984
And that was a reality check that you're

00:22:13.005 --> 00:22:14.566
doing exactly what you were supposed to

00:22:14.605 --> 00:22:14.826
do.

00:22:14.866 --> 00:22:16.548
And God has equipped you for this.

00:22:16.587 --> 00:22:18.269
So don't worry about the finances because

00:22:18.288 --> 00:22:18.769
they coming.

00:22:19.190 --> 00:22:20.411
Keep telling your story.

00:22:21.134 --> 00:22:22.516
If it's God's will,

00:22:22.796 --> 00:22:24.178
God will take care of the bill.

00:22:24.298 --> 00:22:24.698
That's it.

00:22:24.718 --> 00:22:29.402
To quote another guest.

00:22:30.643 --> 00:22:32.184
So, Frederica,

00:22:32.964 --> 00:22:37.148
what takeaway should parents and loved

00:22:37.489 --> 00:22:41.373
ones take away from this show,

00:22:41.432 --> 00:22:43.253
this episode today?

00:22:44.615 --> 00:22:46.076
Pay attention to your kids.

00:22:46.932 --> 00:22:48.512
Listen to your kids.

00:22:49.093 --> 00:22:50.993
Because if you listen, they'll talk.

00:22:51.634 --> 00:22:52.994
But educate them.

00:22:54.035 --> 00:22:57.517
There are things that's out there that one

00:22:57.557 --> 00:22:58.277
pill can kill.

00:22:59.237 --> 00:23:00.617
All it takes is one time.

00:23:01.337 --> 00:23:02.999
And pay attention.

00:23:03.199 --> 00:23:05.059
Don't take no candy from nobody.

00:23:05.460 --> 00:23:07.320
Don't take these vapes from nobody.

00:23:07.361 --> 00:23:09.001
Don't take no pills from nobody.

00:23:09.442 --> 00:23:09.942
Right now,

00:23:10.082 --> 00:23:12.022
it's sidewalk chalk out there that they're

00:23:12.063 --> 00:23:13.864
putting in the playgrounds.

00:23:14.998 --> 00:23:17.259
The children touch it, they pass out,

00:23:17.298 --> 00:23:18.419
they're swiping the kids.

00:23:18.479 --> 00:23:20.338
It goes along with sex trafficking.

00:23:20.679 --> 00:23:21.659
So pay attention.

00:23:21.919 --> 00:23:24.000
Pay attention to signs and things that

00:23:24.039 --> 00:23:27.121
they normally do that they start to

00:23:27.161 --> 00:23:28.201
disconnect from.

00:23:28.760 --> 00:23:30.381
And I just say be involved in your

00:23:30.421 --> 00:23:31.981
child, your loved ones.

00:23:32.541 --> 00:23:34.942
But if they aren't at it, listen.

00:23:35.741 --> 00:23:37.442
Because Quay taught me a lot.

00:23:37.903 --> 00:23:39.823
Because I walked with him these three

00:23:39.863 --> 00:23:40.982
years with that journey.

00:23:41.022 --> 00:23:43.304
So listening is very key.

00:23:44.517 --> 00:23:46.460
And people also need to realize,

00:23:46.519 --> 00:23:47.741
particularly young people,

00:23:48.403 --> 00:23:49.183
is that

00:23:51.971 --> 00:23:53.574
What you may be taking,

00:23:53.614 --> 00:23:56.036
you may not even realize that it's laced

00:23:56.175 --> 00:23:56.836
with something.

00:23:57.596 --> 00:23:58.939
So you might be thinking that you're

00:23:58.959 --> 00:23:59.659
getting weed.

00:23:59.679 --> 00:24:00.920
You might be thinking you're getting

00:24:00.980 --> 00:24:03.643
something in your vape that's like THC or

00:24:03.682 --> 00:24:04.143
whatever.

00:24:04.903 --> 00:24:08.307
Or a gummy that's just like a THC.

00:24:08.666 --> 00:24:11.109
And it can be laced with one of

00:24:11.130 --> 00:24:13.132
these synthetic opioids.

00:24:13.192 --> 00:24:15.574
And so that's why it's so important.

00:24:17.134 --> 00:24:20.317
and it's so important to know number one

00:24:20.336 --> 00:24:24.480
what you're ingesting and even if you've

00:24:24.519 --> 00:24:27.082
gotten something from someone before and

00:24:27.122 --> 00:24:29.443
it was safe doesn't mean that the next

00:24:29.483 --> 00:24:34.487
time it will be one last thing I

00:24:34.507 --> 00:24:37.229
would like to say everybody needs to carry

00:24:37.409 --> 00:24:42.472
Narcan everybody I don't care if you think

00:24:42.593 --> 00:24:44.213
it'll never happen to you

00:24:45.029 --> 00:24:47.550
I work for a dermatology office.

00:24:48.151 --> 00:24:50.031
You don't expect dermatology.

00:24:50.071 --> 00:24:51.192
But in the last month,

00:24:51.532 --> 00:24:53.133
we have had two overdose,

00:24:53.333 --> 00:24:55.233
one a patient's mother,

00:24:55.253 --> 00:24:56.713
I mean a patient's father,

00:24:57.154 --> 00:24:58.275
and one of my employees.

00:24:59.576 --> 00:25:01.435
Everywhere you go, this can happen.

00:25:02.317 --> 00:25:03.336
Just be equipped.

00:25:04.017 --> 00:25:08.618
How can a household get access to Narcan?

00:25:09.201 --> 00:25:10.442
Okay, so our foundation,

00:25:10.481 --> 00:25:11.922
if you reach out to our foundation,

00:25:11.961 --> 00:25:13.002
we can get it to you,

00:25:13.042 --> 00:25:16.305
but you also can go to Georgia Overdose

00:25:16.384 --> 00:25:19.205
Prevention and you can order it.

00:25:20.066 --> 00:25:21.866
You tell them how many in your household,

00:25:21.886 --> 00:25:25.148
they'll send them out for free.

00:25:25.288 --> 00:25:26.109
Okay, and so if you wanted to,

00:25:26.130 --> 00:25:27.069
go ahead.

00:25:27.857 --> 00:25:29.238
Go ahead.

00:25:29.278 --> 00:25:29.557
Say that.

00:25:29.577 --> 00:25:29.739
Go ahead.

00:25:29.759 --> 00:25:31.278
If you wanted to get in contact with

00:25:31.318 --> 00:25:32.159
the foundation,

00:25:32.499 --> 00:25:36.440
the email address is info at M B

00:25:36.619 --> 00:25:38.961
B foundation.org.

00:25:39.040 --> 00:25:41.221
And the B as is B as in

00:25:41.281 --> 00:25:41.761
boy.

00:25:42.382 --> 00:25:42.582
Uh,

00:25:42.882 --> 00:25:46.883
and the E the website is M B

00:25:47.083 --> 00:25:49.124
B foundation.org.

00:25:49.163 --> 00:25:50.263
So, um,

00:25:50.855 --> 00:25:53.277
again if you're if you want to get

00:25:53.376 --> 00:25:56.537
your can of narcan you can also contact

00:25:56.557 --> 00:25:58.557
the foundation in order to be able to

00:25:58.597 --> 00:26:01.557
get um to get narcan and to have

00:26:01.617 --> 00:26:04.659
it in your home in your car at

00:26:04.679 --> 00:26:09.920
your at your work yes one thing about

00:26:10.039 --> 00:26:12.019
the narcan as well and i like to

00:26:12.039 --> 00:26:14.580
tell people this before um

00:26:15.939 --> 00:26:17.001
If it's expired,

00:26:17.584 --> 00:26:20.230
it is still good up to twenty five

00:26:20.451 --> 00:26:20.913
years.

00:26:22.137 --> 00:26:23.239
don't throw it away.

00:26:23.459 --> 00:26:24.680
It is still good.

00:26:25.320 --> 00:26:27.321
So is it easy to administer?

00:26:27.402 --> 00:26:29.063
How do you administer the Narcan?

00:26:29.384 --> 00:26:32.165
So Narcan, it is a nasal spray.

00:26:32.865 --> 00:26:35.087
And just like your Flonase,

00:26:35.147 --> 00:26:38.670
just like nasal cord, you inject,

00:26:38.750 --> 00:26:41.231
you push it in the nostril and push

00:26:41.271 --> 00:26:41.771
the button.

00:26:42.053 --> 00:26:42.532
Push it up.

00:26:42.653 --> 00:26:42.893
Okay.

00:26:42.913 --> 00:26:43.373
That's it.

00:26:43.394 --> 00:26:44.934
But you want to make sure you hit

00:26:44.974 --> 00:26:46.976
that membrane because that's,

00:26:47.556 --> 00:26:48.497
it's a mucosis.

00:26:48.517 --> 00:26:49.397
So it,

00:26:49.917 --> 00:26:51.679
gets to the bloodstream quicker when it

00:26:51.739 --> 00:26:53.539
hits a membrane.

00:26:53.599 --> 00:26:55.040
So pushing it in,

00:26:55.240 --> 00:26:56.981
it's no wrong way to do it.

00:26:57.902 --> 00:26:59.603
You just want it in that nostril.

00:26:59.782 --> 00:27:00.884
Get it in that nostril so that it

00:27:00.903 --> 00:27:02.605
gets into the bloodstream.

00:27:02.865 --> 00:27:04.385
Do you talk about the Narcan,

00:27:04.405 --> 00:27:05.906
how to administer it when you give your

00:27:06.487 --> 00:27:07.307
presentations?

00:27:07.728 --> 00:27:08.107
I do.

00:27:08.508 --> 00:27:08.907
I do.

00:27:09.167 --> 00:27:13.171
I actually do a whole demonstration of the

00:27:13.230 --> 00:27:15.132
signs and symptoms to look for,

00:27:16.031 --> 00:27:17.432
which is the

00:27:19.295 --> 00:27:21.856
Dilated pupils, slurring of the words,

00:27:22.278 --> 00:27:23.338
the gurgling,

00:27:23.719 --> 00:27:26.221
those are things that you know that it

00:27:26.240 --> 00:27:30.724
can be a suspected overdose or just

00:27:30.845 --> 00:27:31.645
unresponsive.

00:27:32.125 --> 00:27:34.268
And even if the person, say for instance,

00:27:34.288 --> 00:27:36.589
you administer it and it wasn't an

00:27:36.690 --> 00:27:38.251
overdose, it will not hurt them.

00:27:38.912 --> 00:27:40.192
Narcan will not hurt them.

00:27:40.513 --> 00:27:41.555
You said gurgling.

00:27:41.615 --> 00:27:43.395
Is the gurgling kind of like the death

00:27:43.455 --> 00:27:44.297
rattle gurgling?

00:27:44.740 --> 00:27:46.942
It's similar to the death rattle gurgling,

00:27:47.002 --> 00:27:49.665
and it's because what the drug has done

00:27:49.726 --> 00:27:51.507
is told the brain not to breathe.

00:27:52.167 --> 00:27:53.489
Oh, my.

00:27:53.608 --> 00:27:55.611
And so the body is going back and

00:27:55.651 --> 00:27:58.433
forth saying, do I breathe, do I don't?

00:27:58.473 --> 00:28:01.636
So that gurgling is the death gurgle.

00:28:01.757 --> 00:28:05.760
What's known, you know, people who...

00:28:06.271 --> 00:28:09.294
dealt with death they call it yes yes

00:28:10.615 --> 00:28:14.077
which is almost it's indescribable it is

00:28:14.137 --> 00:28:17.299
indescribable once you've heard it you

00:28:17.339 --> 00:28:21.282
will never forget it absolutely never

00:28:21.303 --> 00:28:25.286
forget it yes and that would be absolutely

00:28:25.486 --> 00:28:29.888
horrifying to hear that I did not know

00:28:30.048 --> 00:28:32.211
that that is one of

00:28:34.073 --> 00:28:35.534
the symptoms to look out for one of

00:28:35.574 --> 00:28:37.914
the signs to look out for it is

00:28:37.994 --> 00:28:39.976
but that's not just because you heard it

00:28:40.196 --> 00:28:43.979
don't mean you can't bring them back so

00:28:44.239 --> 00:28:46.560
don't let that be a fear that you've

00:28:46.661 --> 00:28:49.863
lost or you didn't succeed continue doing

00:28:49.903 --> 00:28:52.744
the same thing you were doing and after

00:28:52.785 --> 00:28:54.726
you've administered one you wait ninety

00:28:54.826 --> 00:28:56.807
seconds to a hundred and twenty seconds

00:28:56.846 --> 00:28:59.729
and then you can administer another one so

00:29:00.128 --> 00:29:01.790
a lot of times it takes more than

00:29:01.911 --> 00:29:02.451
one dose

00:29:03.257 --> 00:29:04.377
That's what I was going to ask, too.

00:29:04.438 --> 00:29:05.178
What's that level?

00:29:05.238 --> 00:29:07.419
But one thing I do want to say

00:29:07.799 --> 00:29:09.319
is to our young people,

00:29:09.780 --> 00:29:11.942
sometimes you think you're just having fun

00:29:12.402 --> 00:29:14.963
and you're trying something new and it

00:29:15.023 --> 00:29:16.423
looks cool.

00:29:18.244 --> 00:29:20.006
Really think about what you're doing,

00:29:20.046 --> 00:29:22.327
because when you exchange these items that

00:29:22.367 --> 00:29:24.028
you don't even know what you have in

00:29:24.048 --> 00:29:25.249
your own possession,

00:29:25.690 --> 00:29:27.530
you can share something that may take

00:29:27.570 --> 00:29:28.471
someone's life.

00:29:29.132 --> 00:29:31.393
And now two families.

00:29:33.145 --> 00:29:35.507
have been impacted by that.

00:29:35.946 --> 00:29:36.807
Because like you said,

00:29:36.827 --> 00:29:40.028
it was two people who were convicted or

00:29:40.048 --> 00:29:41.430
charged during the process.

00:29:43.111 --> 00:29:45.751
And these are young people.

00:29:45.852 --> 00:29:48.893
And maybe some people may not know.

00:29:48.932 --> 00:29:49.492
They're like, hey,

00:29:49.512 --> 00:29:50.953
let's just go have a good time.

00:29:51.394 --> 00:29:54.395
And then now the unthinkable happens.

00:29:54.536 --> 00:29:56.215
So young people, please, please,

00:29:56.256 --> 00:29:59.458
please don't do it.

00:29:59.877 --> 00:30:00.597
Don't do it.

00:30:00.718 --> 00:30:01.898
Talk to your parents.

00:30:02.491 --> 00:30:03.813
Talk to your educators.

00:30:04.272 --> 00:30:06.375
Get involved with MBB Foundation.

00:30:06.434 --> 00:30:11.617
Just find someone to talk to because it

00:30:11.637 --> 00:30:12.398
could be you.

00:30:13.680 --> 00:30:14.641
It could be you.

00:30:15.320 --> 00:30:17.542
And when you just said the whole chalk

00:30:17.603 --> 00:30:19.084
thing and people doing this stuff,

00:30:19.104 --> 00:30:21.625
like we really have to protect our babies.

00:30:22.086 --> 00:30:23.487
We have to protect our babies.

00:30:24.166 --> 00:30:25.887
And the first way is through a

00:30:25.948 --> 00:30:27.068
conversation like this.

00:30:27.088 --> 00:30:28.630
So thank you for being vulnerable.

00:30:28.690 --> 00:30:31.011
Thank you for sharing your testimonies.

00:30:31.339 --> 00:30:32.800
Thank you for telling us about your

00:30:32.820 --> 00:30:36.123
precious baby and turning your pain into

00:30:36.163 --> 00:30:38.384
purpose so you can save other lives.

00:30:39.164 --> 00:30:42.067
And with everything that you're doing,

00:30:42.166 --> 00:30:44.008
how do you protect your mental wellness?

00:30:45.088 --> 00:30:46.549
I got a family counselor.

00:30:46.930 --> 00:30:49.051
I got an individual counselor.

00:30:49.912 --> 00:30:52.473
And I practice self-care more now.

00:30:52.894 --> 00:30:55.435
But I can say, since Quay has passed,

00:30:55.655 --> 00:30:57.217
it has given me a peace

00:30:58.083 --> 00:30:59.564
because I'm not worrying anymore.

00:30:59.884 --> 00:31:00.944
I used to watch the news,

00:31:01.125 --> 00:31:04.407
it's the peace that surpasses all

00:31:04.448 --> 00:31:04.988
understanding.

00:31:05.028 --> 00:31:06.769
So now I'm able to take care of

00:31:06.788 --> 00:31:06.949
me.

00:31:07.829 --> 00:31:09.290
And he was the baby, like I said,

00:31:09.330 --> 00:31:10.432
so I'm empty nested.

00:31:11.492 --> 00:31:14.034
I'm outside, I'm enjoying life.

00:31:14.734 --> 00:31:15.935
I get on a flight just to go

00:31:15.976 --> 00:31:16.756
somewhere to eat.

00:31:18.436 --> 00:31:19.718
And I love water.

00:31:20.219 --> 00:31:23.101
And when I start to feel,

00:31:23.721 --> 00:31:25.623
that's where my safe place is to the

00:31:25.663 --> 00:31:25.923
water.

00:31:27.375 --> 00:31:29.117
And it don't matter if it's the beach

00:31:29.417 --> 00:31:30.599
or a waterfall.

00:31:30.740 --> 00:31:31.901
I just need to hear the water.

00:31:32.362 --> 00:31:38.109
There's something cathartic about water.

00:31:38.289 --> 00:31:38.911
Mm-hmm.

00:31:39.934 --> 00:31:44.420
There's something healing about water.

00:31:44.460 --> 00:31:45.561
Take me to the water.

00:31:45.622 --> 00:31:46.863
Take me to the river.

00:31:47.084 --> 00:31:49.026
It's all about the water.

00:31:49.046 --> 00:31:51.650
It's all about the water.

00:31:52.109 --> 00:31:54.794
I remember being younger.

00:31:54.874 --> 00:31:55.734
You have cramps.

00:31:56.194 --> 00:31:56.556
I'd go...

00:31:57.817 --> 00:31:58.896
Lay in the tub.

00:31:59.836 --> 00:32:00.498
In the tub.

00:32:00.817 --> 00:32:01.778
Hot water.

00:32:04.498 --> 00:32:07.719
But that water just made you feel better.

00:32:07.798 --> 00:32:08.798
Being in the water.

00:32:08.818 --> 00:32:13.861
There's something very calming and

00:32:13.941 --> 00:32:15.921
relaxing about being in the water.

00:32:15.980 --> 00:32:18.541
One of the things I was thinking about

00:32:18.862 --> 00:32:23.782
is for the parents and the loved ones

00:32:23.843 --> 00:32:25.262
who dealt with

00:32:26.884 --> 00:32:29.326
loved ones that were struggling with

00:32:29.425 --> 00:32:33.969
addiction the worry the anxiety the

00:32:34.249 --> 00:32:38.412
sleepless nights worry and especially if

00:32:39.071 --> 00:32:40.732
you've put a boundary and you said you

00:32:40.772 --> 00:32:42.814
cannot do this in my home and you

00:32:42.854 --> 00:32:46.676
cannot be here when you're doing this and

00:32:46.717 --> 00:32:48.778
they're out there in the world and not

00:32:48.877 --> 00:32:52.881
knowing what's going on with them

00:32:54.107 --> 00:32:56.911
And because the call that if you've,

00:32:57.672 --> 00:33:00.054
for anyone who's listening or watching

00:33:00.074 --> 00:33:00.275
this,

00:33:00.615 --> 00:33:02.876
if you've ever had a loved one that's

00:33:02.936 --> 00:33:05.079
dealt with addiction,

00:33:05.099 --> 00:33:07.923
the greatest fear is getting that call

00:33:07.962 --> 00:33:10.684
that they're no longer with us.

00:33:11.006 --> 00:33:12.727
Yes.

00:33:12.748 --> 00:33:13.808
But also...

00:33:15.220 --> 00:33:17.842
learning that they're no longer in pain

00:33:17.862 --> 00:33:20.463
because addiction is a pain anyone who's

00:33:20.523 --> 00:33:22.025
dealt with the loved one that's dealt with

00:33:22.065 --> 00:33:23.826
addiction know that it's pain because

00:33:24.146 --> 00:33:25.887
people that are dealing with addiction

00:33:25.928 --> 00:33:27.528
living with addiction even if they're

00:33:27.568 --> 00:33:29.931
getting over it you know coping with you

00:33:29.951 --> 00:33:32.512
know being substance free for however long

00:33:33.232 --> 00:33:37.096
they still struggle on it's a day-to-day

00:33:37.135 --> 00:33:39.657
struggle for the rest of your life for

00:33:39.678 --> 00:33:41.859
the rest of your life and every second

00:33:41.960 --> 00:33:42.440
counts

00:33:43.479 --> 00:33:45.920
And like I said,

00:33:45.960 --> 00:33:48.701
Quay was three months clean.

00:33:48.721 --> 00:33:51.923
But all it took is that one release.

00:33:52.003 --> 00:33:54.845
And that next time that you hit something

00:33:55.226 --> 00:33:57.906
could be the last time because your body

00:33:57.987 --> 00:33:59.647
isn't immune to it anymore.

00:34:00.067 --> 00:34:01.209
So therefore,

00:34:02.789 --> 00:34:04.671
it sends your body into a stress.

00:34:05.131 --> 00:34:06.372
But one thing about it,

00:34:07.192 --> 00:34:08.773
and that's why I say listen,

00:34:09.713 --> 00:34:11.635
because they cry out.

00:34:12.369 --> 00:34:13.630
And they cry loud.

00:34:13.951 --> 00:34:16.072
It's either they're going to cry loud of

00:34:16.132 --> 00:34:17.054
how high they get,

00:34:18.195 --> 00:34:20.739
or they're going to cry loud trusting you

00:34:20.759 --> 00:34:23.161
with their secret.

00:34:23.382 --> 00:34:24.784
And that right there,

00:34:24.884 --> 00:34:26.445
I tell parents all the time,

00:34:26.806 --> 00:34:27.266
first of all,

00:34:27.306 --> 00:34:28.807
don't think it can never happen to your

00:34:28.847 --> 00:34:29.148
child.

00:34:29.639 --> 00:34:32.719
Don't think that your child's not doing

00:34:32.739 --> 00:34:35.340
these things because the world is giving

00:34:35.400 --> 00:34:35.539
it.

00:34:35.840 --> 00:34:37.481
Yes.

00:34:38.260 --> 00:34:40.101
It's not how much you make.

00:34:40.201 --> 00:34:42.202
It's not the education you have.

00:34:42.762 --> 00:34:46.521
This right here, it has no,

00:34:46.842 --> 00:34:47.822
it don't discriminate.

00:34:48.342 --> 00:34:49.063
It really don't.

00:34:49.583 --> 00:34:49.722
Yeah.

00:34:49.762 --> 00:34:56.704
The son of the vice president and then

00:34:56.744 --> 00:34:57.425
the president.

00:34:58.045 --> 00:34:59.085
Yeah.

00:34:59.164 --> 00:34:59.364
Yeah.

00:35:00.056 --> 00:35:01.579
It's just wherever you have access.

00:35:01.619 --> 00:35:02.340
And like you said,

00:35:02.780 --> 00:35:04.603
if it's someone who's willing to move it

00:35:05.565 --> 00:35:07.228
and try to create a customer,

00:35:07.467 --> 00:35:09.030
because that's just what it is, right?

00:35:09.050 --> 00:35:09.992
That's just how it is.

00:35:10.012 --> 00:35:12.396
If somebody pushing something to make a

00:35:12.436 --> 00:35:12.876
profit,

00:35:13.757 --> 00:35:16.057
at your expense, at your life,

00:35:16.237 --> 00:35:17.139
at your family.

00:35:17.518 --> 00:35:20.019
And that's why we have to continue to

00:35:20.039 --> 00:35:21.641
have these conversations so people can

00:35:21.701 --> 00:35:22.161
stop.

00:35:23.121 --> 00:35:24.663
Because if we stop buying it,

00:35:24.722 --> 00:35:26.063
if we start letting people know what it

00:35:26.083 --> 00:35:27.405
looks like, what it smells like,

00:35:27.545 --> 00:35:28.764
what it sounds like,

00:35:29.465 --> 00:35:32.987
how it shows up in the physical after

00:35:33.027 --> 00:35:34.849
you've ingested it,

00:35:34.909 --> 00:35:36.809
now we can start doing things about it.

00:35:37.210 --> 00:35:38.391
And before I met you,

00:35:39.150 --> 00:35:40.871
I didn't know about this.

00:35:41.521 --> 00:35:44.463
all together so we every every generation

00:35:44.543 --> 00:35:46.125
it seems like it's a new it's something

00:35:46.144 --> 00:35:48.045
that was cracked there was you know a

00:35:48.065 --> 00:35:49.847
lot and people are doing it and all

00:35:49.887 --> 00:35:52.367
types of things so it's just about

00:35:53.128 --> 00:35:55.690
educating folks and letting people know

00:35:55.710 --> 00:35:57.271
and get aware because listen there are

00:35:57.311 --> 00:36:00.092
some evil people out here yes it is

00:36:00.112 --> 00:36:02.512
they are willing to make money for your

00:36:02.572 --> 00:36:06.295
life it is to take your life you

00:36:06.335 --> 00:36:08.876
know so you ladies have you can't y'all

00:36:09.016 --> 00:36:10.498
both of y'all have dropped some knowledge

00:36:10.557 --> 00:36:10.838
on me

00:36:11.704 --> 00:36:12.043
you know,

00:36:12.204 --> 00:36:14.565
in navigating this entire space and making

00:36:14.585 --> 00:36:15.204
sure, because, you know,

00:36:15.244 --> 00:36:17.846
being around kids, mentoring kids,

00:36:17.905 --> 00:36:19.786
you want to, we all, it's a village.

00:36:20.106 --> 00:36:21.005
It takes a village.

00:36:21.385 --> 00:36:21.887
It is.

00:36:21.927 --> 00:36:23.246
And we really need to look out for,

00:36:23.266 --> 00:36:24.786
do you have any upcoming events or

00:36:24.867 --> 00:36:25.086
anything?

00:36:25.106 --> 00:36:26.128
I know you said you're about to go

00:36:26.168 --> 00:36:27.827
out of town and then we'll let that

00:36:28.007 --> 00:36:29.568
wrap up and tell everybody what you're

00:36:29.588 --> 00:36:31.009
doing one more time and how they can

00:36:31.048 --> 00:36:31.628
support you.

00:36:32.306 --> 00:36:32.606
Okay,

00:36:32.666 --> 00:36:34.708
so I am going out of town for

00:36:34.909 --> 00:36:38.393
Tennessee Overdose Prevention Day because

00:36:38.413 --> 00:36:39.032
in Georgia,

00:36:39.893 --> 00:36:41.876
next year is going to be different because

00:36:41.936 --> 00:36:43.257
I'm bringing it to Georgia.

00:36:43.998 --> 00:36:47.181
But they have this big thing for Overdose

00:36:47.320 --> 00:36:48.041
Awareness Day,

00:36:48.061 --> 00:36:49.623
which is August thirty first.

00:36:50.003 --> 00:36:50.844
So I'm going out there.

00:36:50.864 --> 00:36:55.168
I'm actually speaking in Covington on

00:36:55.268 --> 00:36:55.909
Friday.

00:36:57.949 --> 00:37:00.490
at Conyers Methodist Church for their

00:37:00.650 --> 00:37:02.251
overdose awareness program.

00:37:02.710 --> 00:37:04.572
But we have a big car show that's

00:37:04.612 --> 00:37:06.112
coming up October the tenth.

00:37:06.452 --> 00:37:07.731
It's going to be in Newton County.

00:37:07.791 --> 00:37:09.733
We partner with the Drug and Alcohol

00:37:11.112 --> 00:37:12.534
Council of Georgia,

00:37:13.213 --> 00:37:14.793
and we're bringing the entertainment

00:37:14.833 --> 00:37:15.634
portion of it.

00:37:16.275 --> 00:37:17.795
And it's the car show.

00:37:18.643 --> 00:37:20.766
and giving out educational materials

00:37:20.847 --> 00:37:23.248
educating the community and it's supposed

00:37:23.268 --> 00:37:27.172
to be six hundred youth out there and

00:37:27.193 --> 00:37:29.496
those cars attract the youth and then we

00:37:29.516 --> 00:37:36.664
can educate them that's it that's it so

00:37:36.824 --> 00:37:38.505
like i i do like to tell people

00:37:39.125 --> 00:37:41.445
If you would like to have the foundation

00:37:41.525 --> 00:37:42.327
at your events,

00:37:42.606 --> 00:37:44.788
one thing that we have been specializing

00:37:44.867 --> 00:37:46.387
in is bringing a car show.

00:37:46.969 --> 00:37:48.730
And we have a car club that does

00:37:48.809 --> 00:37:51.251
nothing but car shows for a cause.

00:37:51.291 --> 00:37:52.972
Oh, wow.

00:37:53.032 --> 00:37:54.211
That's amazing.

00:37:54.271 --> 00:37:55.293
Yes.

00:37:55.313 --> 00:37:57.173
So we'll have to support that.

00:37:57.213 --> 00:37:58.793
That date again was August thirty first.

00:37:59.315 --> 00:37:59.454
No,

00:37:59.554 --> 00:38:01.014
August thirty first is Monday when I'm

00:38:01.034 --> 00:38:01.936
going to Tennessee.

00:38:02.036 --> 00:38:03.996
This date is October the tenth.

00:38:04.356 --> 00:38:07.097
And I think it's at Lincoln Field and

00:38:07.237 --> 00:38:08.559
Conyers or Covington.

00:38:10.219 --> 00:38:12.400
It's like on the line on your website.

00:38:12.920 --> 00:38:14.041
It's not on the website yet.

00:38:14.081 --> 00:38:15.922
I'm waiting on the drug and alcohol

00:38:16.164 --> 00:38:19.326
council to update me with the flyer so

00:38:19.445 --> 00:38:21.347
I can put that information out on my

00:38:21.387 --> 00:38:21.967
website.

00:38:22.327 --> 00:38:24.670
But stay up with our social media as

00:38:24.730 --> 00:38:25.050
well.

00:38:25.090 --> 00:38:26.931
We do have a Facebook and it's the

00:38:26.952 --> 00:38:29.193
Marquavius Bernard Broughton Foundation.

00:38:29.914 --> 00:38:32.376
And we have a TikTok,

00:38:32.416 --> 00:38:34.677
which is also MBB Foundation.

00:38:35.637 --> 00:38:39.139
ink um but i try to keep everything

00:38:39.219 --> 00:38:41.780
on social media they shut my instagram

00:38:41.800 --> 00:38:43.639
down and said i was selling drugs so

00:38:44.139 --> 00:38:48.360
oh lord four times my nerves them in

00:38:48.380 --> 00:38:51.262
tick tock but but they'll shut you down

00:38:51.282 --> 00:38:52.922
but somebody can have delivered to your

00:38:52.961 --> 00:38:54.943
house in an uber or two book okay

00:38:55.422 --> 00:38:58.403
yeah which started on instagram you could

00:38:58.423 --> 00:39:03.005
be on ig half naked yeah it's okay

00:39:03.025 --> 00:39:03.724
it's just the devil

00:39:05.822 --> 00:39:06.403
She's stupid.

00:39:15.362 --> 00:39:19.204
You can keep up with the Markavius Rotten

00:39:19.244 --> 00:39:23.206
Foundation at mbbfoundation.org.

00:39:23.327 --> 00:39:26.668
And also you can email Frederica at info

00:39:26.809 --> 00:39:29.750
at mbbfoundation.org.

00:39:30.250 --> 00:39:31.090
One last thing.

00:39:31.610 --> 00:39:32.791
I want to give a phone number.

00:39:32.911 --> 00:39:34.452
Anytime they want to reach out to me,

00:39:34.492 --> 00:39:37.074
if you dial one eight four four one

00:39:37.134 --> 00:39:38.974
life, you'll get me.

00:39:39.896 --> 00:39:44.097
One eight four four one life.

00:39:44.724 --> 00:39:46.925
Is that the number one or spelled out?

00:39:47.224 --> 00:39:47.865
Spelled out.

00:39:48.485 --> 00:39:48.885
Okay.

00:39:49.306 --> 00:39:52.108
Yeah, that would make sense, wouldn't it?

00:39:52.148 --> 00:39:54.949
That would make sense.

00:39:54.969 --> 00:39:58.391
You need ten digits.

00:39:58.431 --> 00:40:01.452
One day for one life.

00:40:02.733 --> 00:40:06.096
And you can reach out to Frederica,

00:40:06.576 --> 00:40:08.277
learn more about the foundation,

00:40:08.297 --> 00:40:09.797
learn how to get Narcan,

00:40:11.077 --> 00:40:12.099
learn how to save a life.

00:40:14.228 --> 00:40:14.289
Yes.

00:40:14.449 --> 00:40:15.250
And that life might be your own.

00:40:16.210 --> 00:40:16.610
Yes.

00:40:17.150 --> 00:40:18.311
And I speak anywhere.

00:40:18.371 --> 00:40:19.753
So if you want me to come speak,

00:40:19.833 --> 00:40:21.795
tell the story, train on Narcan,

00:40:22.414 --> 00:40:23.896
I am there.

00:40:24.916 --> 00:40:25.777
I mean, you called me,

00:40:25.898 --> 00:40:27.338
Wanda called me on a Tuesday.

00:40:27.398 --> 00:40:28.079
On Thursday,

00:40:28.159 --> 00:40:29.721
I was speaking down in middle Georgia.

00:40:29.840 --> 00:40:30.442
I traveled.

00:40:31.163 --> 00:40:33.403
And so I literally,

Founder & CEO, The Marquavies Bernard Broughton Foundation, Inc.

Frederica Roberson is the Founder and President of The Marquavies Bernard Broughton Foundation, Inc., a Georgia-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to overdose prevention, substance use education, youth empowerment, and supporting individuals and families impacted by addiction.

Her advocacy was born from unimaginable tragedy. On April 1, 2025, Frederica lost her youngest son, Marquavies "Qua" Broughton, to nitazene poisoning. Instead of allowing grief to define her, she transformed her pain into purpose, creating a movement focused on saving lives through education, awareness, prevention, and community partnerships.

Today, Frederica is recognized as a passionate advocate and public speaker, collaborating with law enforcement agencies, healthcare organizations, schools, colleges, universities, recovery programs, public health leaders, and community organizations throughout Georgia. Through her foundation, she has helped distribute hundreds of naloxone kits, provides overdose prevention education, and works to increase awareness of the growing threat posed by fentanyl, nitazenes, and other synthetic drugs.

Professionally, Frederica has more than 26 years of experience in healthcare and currently serves as a Practice Manager. She is also completing her Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, further strengthening her ability to serve individuals and communities affected by substance use and mental health challenges.

Her presentations combine personal testimony, factual education, and a message of hope that inspir… Read More
