Too Young for Breast Cancer? Chantel Roberts’ Story of Survival
At just 30 years old, Chantel Roberts was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer after recognizing that something in her body wasn’t right. Her experience became a powerful lesson in knowing your body, asking questions, and advocating for yourself—regardless of your age.
In this inspiring episode of Conversations with Karen and Kat, Chantel and her mother, Michelle Roberts, share their family’s journey through breast cancer, loss, treatment, faith, healing, and purpose.
Chantel opens up about chemotherapy, radiation, a double mastectomy, and the emotional realities of treatment. She also shares how family and friends supported her throughout her journey and why practical support can mean so much to someone undergoing cancer treatment.
Michelle discusses how their family’s experiences with cancer helped inspire Survivor Legacy Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to providing support, resources, education, advocacy, and hope to individuals and families affected by cancer. The organization also works to raise awareness and help bridge gaps in cancer care and education.
The conversation explores early detection, barriers to cancer screenings, dense breast tissue, mental health, family support, and the importance of seeking additional medical evaluation when something does not feel right.
The Roberts family is also taking its message of awareness into the community through the Survivor Legacy Breast & Lung Cancer Walk/Run, bringing survivors, caregivers, families, and supporters together to raise awareness and stand with those affected by cancer.

00:00:12.044 --> 00:00:12.746
Hello,
00:00:12.865 --> 00:00:14.526
and welcome back to Conversations with
00:00:14.567 --> 00:00:15.288
Karen and Kat,
00:00:15.548 --> 00:00:17.850
the podcast where we connect with powerful
00:00:17.910 --> 00:00:19.952
changemakers, visionaries,
00:00:20.032 --> 00:00:22.553
and everyday heroes who are shaping
00:00:22.594 --> 00:00:24.096
culture and community.
00:00:24.475 --> 00:00:25.757
I am Karen Scott Green.
00:00:26.097 --> 00:00:27.259
And I'm Kat Hardrick.
00:00:27.949 --> 00:00:30.111
Today in our love seats,
00:00:30.391 --> 00:00:33.213
we are joined by Michelle and Chantel
00:00:33.253 --> 00:00:33.774
Roberts,
00:00:34.115 --> 00:00:38.558
the CEO and CFO of Survivor Legacy,
00:00:39.039 --> 00:00:41.180
an organization born from a deeply
00:00:41.240 --> 00:00:43.762
personal journey with cancer, family,
00:00:44.003 --> 00:00:45.543
faith, and perseverance.
00:00:46.085 --> 00:00:47.566
At just thirty years old,
00:00:47.665 --> 00:00:50.148
Chantel was diagnosed with stage three
00:00:50.207 --> 00:00:50.908
breast cancer,
00:00:51.317 --> 00:00:52.517
in twenty twenty three.
00:00:52.838 --> 00:00:55.277
Her diagnosis came after her family had
00:00:55.518 --> 00:00:58.520
already experienced a devastating loss of
00:00:58.539 --> 00:00:59.619
her cousin, Nancy,
00:00:59.880 --> 00:01:01.901
who passed away from cancer at just thirty
00:01:01.960 --> 00:01:02.820
nine years old,
00:01:03.261 --> 00:01:05.882
leaving behind two young children during
00:01:05.921 --> 00:01:07.022
Chantel's treatment.
00:01:08.024 --> 00:01:10.686
A conversation with her mother about
00:01:10.826 --> 00:01:14.370
honoring Nancy's legacy helped inspire the
00:01:14.430 --> 00:01:16.513
name Survivors Legacy,
00:01:16.893 --> 00:01:19.215
a reminder that the impact of those
00:01:19.296 --> 00:01:21.938
touched by cancer continues through the
00:01:21.977 --> 00:01:23.299
lives they inspire.
00:01:24.228 --> 00:01:24.828
Today,
00:01:25.269 --> 00:01:27.971
Michelle and Chantel are turning their
00:01:28.010 --> 00:01:31.093
family's experience into purpose through
00:01:31.132 --> 00:01:32.414
Survivor Legacy.
00:01:32.674 --> 00:01:35.575
We're excited to hear about your story and
00:01:35.594 --> 00:01:38.197
to learn how you're helping others.
00:01:39.337 --> 00:01:41.257
And we'll talk more about the work that
00:01:41.278 --> 00:01:42.039
they're doing
00:01:42.498 --> 00:01:44.379
and they have a five K coming up
00:01:45.200 --> 00:01:47.361
for breast cancer and lung cancer at
00:01:47.400 --> 00:01:49.662
Alexander Park in Lawrenceville.
00:01:50.063 --> 00:01:52.063
But today, ladies,
00:01:52.162 --> 00:01:53.843
thank you for joining us.
00:01:55.844 --> 00:01:56.926
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
00:01:57.346 --> 00:02:00.266
So Chantel, I wanna start with you.
00:02:00.566 --> 00:02:04.388
You're diagnosed at thirty years old with
00:02:04.448 --> 00:02:06.370
stage three breast cancer.
00:02:07.438 --> 00:02:09.860
Did you have any family history?
00:02:09.900 --> 00:02:12.542
Was there anything that put this on your
00:02:12.602 --> 00:02:16.224
radar to get my breast exam?
00:02:18.847 --> 00:02:20.127
What brought it to your attention?
00:02:20.989 --> 00:02:23.491
So I was in the shower and I
00:02:23.570 --> 00:02:26.372
felt a lump on my right side,
00:02:26.413 --> 00:02:28.034
like right underneath my arm.
00:02:28.094 --> 00:02:28.835
So like, you know,
00:02:28.895 --> 00:02:29.975
they always tell you to check.
00:02:30.497 --> 00:02:32.198
So my hand was up in the air,
00:02:32.658 --> 00:02:34.139
washing under my arm and I felt a
00:02:34.199 --> 00:02:34.419
lump.
00:02:35.310 --> 00:02:40.133
And then I just pretty much was like,
00:02:40.174 --> 00:02:40.253
yeah,
00:02:40.294 --> 00:02:42.254
I need to go get checked because I
00:02:42.294 --> 00:02:43.996
know that there is a few people in
00:02:44.036 --> 00:02:46.899
my family that did have it.
00:02:46.959 --> 00:02:49.460
Theirs wasn't as severe as mine's,
00:02:49.621 --> 00:02:51.981
but because of my age,
00:02:52.042 --> 00:02:54.243
by time I was able to get treated,
00:02:55.264 --> 00:02:57.947
it had progressed because it was like this
00:02:57.986 --> 00:02:59.728
small when I first felt it,
00:02:59.788 --> 00:03:00.649
but by time,
00:03:01.288 --> 00:03:02.329
I was diagnosed.
00:03:02.449 --> 00:03:06.270
My whole breast was pretty much infected
00:03:06.311 --> 00:03:07.911
to the point it transferred to my lymph
00:03:07.971 --> 00:03:08.991
nodes under my arm.
00:03:09.752 --> 00:03:12.393
So from the time you felt the lump
00:03:13.552 --> 00:03:15.133
to the time you were diagnosed,
00:03:15.174 --> 00:03:15.913
how long was that?
00:03:16.633 --> 00:03:20.135
So I felt the lump in December and
00:03:20.276 --> 00:03:24.497
I didn't get diagnosed until February.
00:03:24.556 --> 00:03:25.317
Okay.
00:03:25.697 --> 00:03:26.657
Why did it take two months?
00:03:26.677 --> 00:03:27.318
What was going on?
00:03:27.711 --> 00:03:28.872
I went to,
00:03:29.912 --> 00:03:32.173
because of my age for one,
00:03:32.274 --> 00:03:35.675
I went to urgent care first because my
00:03:35.754 --> 00:03:39.257
OB had, the appointments were so far out.
00:03:39.317 --> 00:03:40.978
So I went to urgent care just,
00:03:41.117 --> 00:03:41.418
you know,
00:03:41.478 --> 00:03:42.618
for somebody to look at me and they
00:03:42.639 --> 00:03:44.800
was like, no, you're too young,
00:03:44.860 --> 00:03:46.161
it's not breast cancer.
00:03:46.281 --> 00:03:48.042
And when I told them that I did
00:03:48.081 --> 00:03:49.682
have a few family members that had it,
00:03:49.723 --> 00:03:50.182
they was like, oh,
00:03:50.203 --> 00:03:53.425
that's not close enough for it to be
00:03:53.884 --> 00:03:54.945
anything crazy.
00:03:55.746 --> 00:03:57.668
so they gave me antibiotics because they
00:03:57.747 --> 00:03:59.348
asked me if i if i had a
00:03:59.408 --> 00:04:01.390
child if i breastfed and they said it
00:04:01.411 --> 00:04:04.272
could just be infected milk ducks so they
00:04:04.293 --> 00:04:06.854
gave me the antibiotic antibiotics it was
00:04:06.875 --> 00:04:09.296
supposed to be for ten days and i
00:04:09.317 --> 00:04:11.218
think after day three i was like this
00:04:11.239 --> 00:04:12.780
is not working because you know when
00:04:12.800 --> 00:04:14.480
you're on antibiotics you know it works
00:04:14.540 --> 00:04:16.802
right away like you start feeling it so
00:04:16.822 --> 00:04:19.545
i didn't feel anything within the first
00:04:19.586 --> 00:04:20.867
two to three days and i just stopped
00:04:20.887 --> 00:04:21.887
taking it and then
00:04:22.728 --> 00:04:23.968
I called my OB again,
00:04:24.288 --> 00:04:25.490
and then they pushed up my appointment.
00:04:25.509 --> 00:04:26.992
I got another appointment.
00:04:27.872 --> 00:04:29.774
And when I got there,
00:04:29.874 --> 00:04:32.136
she basically explained to me like, hey,
00:04:32.276 --> 00:04:34.398
yeah, technically when you're this age,
00:04:34.478 --> 00:04:37.120
it's not really a push to go get
00:04:37.180 --> 00:04:37.639
checked.
00:04:37.860 --> 00:04:39.802
It's, you know, because you're so young.
00:04:40.642 --> 00:04:42.283
And then she put in the order for
00:04:42.324 --> 00:04:44.865
me to get the mammogram and everything.
00:04:44.906 --> 00:04:46.827
So even with your family history,
00:04:47.108 --> 00:04:49.930
there was no sense of urgency by medical
00:04:49.970 --> 00:04:50.511
personnel?
00:04:51.130 --> 00:04:52.072
Not really, no.
00:04:53.886 --> 00:04:56.048
was more like oh you're young you'll be
00:04:56.108 --> 00:04:59.629
okay it's just you but you know you
00:04:59.649 --> 00:05:00.810
have to know your body and i was
00:05:00.831 --> 00:05:03.872
like no it went from a little thing
00:05:03.913 --> 00:05:05.233
to i could see the difference in my
00:05:05.254 --> 00:05:07.836
breasts and i already had big breasts so
00:05:07.935 --> 00:05:09.858
i could see the complete difference in the
00:05:09.898 --> 00:05:13.040
two so it's good that you were an
00:05:13.060 --> 00:05:18.543
advocate for yourself but mom when you had
00:05:18.564 --> 00:05:20.045
to be strong for your daughter
00:05:20.853 --> 00:05:22.314
going through this process,
00:05:22.394 --> 00:05:24.357
what are some things you had to realize
00:05:24.396 --> 00:05:26.798
about yourself and your own concerns about
00:05:27.218 --> 00:05:28.500
your baby's well-being?
00:05:29.540 --> 00:05:30.862
So about myself,
00:05:30.901 --> 00:05:33.783
so my mom died from ovarian cancer at
00:05:33.803 --> 00:05:34.625
a very young age.
00:05:34.665 --> 00:05:35.565
She was forty eight.
00:05:35.706 --> 00:05:37.687
Chantel wasn't born yet when my mother
00:05:37.728 --> 00:05:38.088
died.
00:05:38.932 --> 00:05:39.932
Um, so based on that,
00:05:39.973 --> 00:05:41.494
my kids had to be checked at an
00:05:41.553 --> 00:05:43.814
earlier age until did go and get checked
00:05:43.855 --> 00:05:45.475
before in November.
00:05:45.956 --> 00:05:47.637
But when she went in November and she
00:05:47.656 --> 00:05:49.497
did her mammogram, nothing showed up.
00:05:49.898 --> 00:05:51.538
And I think it has happened for a
00:05:51.598 --> 00:05:52.120
long while.
00:05:52.180 --> 00:05:54.560
So we can, the story kind of get.
00:05:56.002 --> 00:05:57.624
messed up a little bit, I'm sorry,
00:05:57.963 --> 00:06:00.425
where we may leave some things out or
00:06:00.466 --> 00:06:02.288
just forget because it's been a while.
00:06:02.728 --> 00:06:03.069
However,
00:06:03.108 --> 00:06:05.011
when she went for the first test and
00:06:05.031 --> 00:06:06.651
they told her it was milk ducts built
00:06:06.791 --> 00:06:08.754
up, as she said, she know her body.
00:06:08.774 --> 00:06:09.535
She's like, mom,
00:06:09.555 --> 00:06:11.036
I don't think this is milk ducts built
00:06:11.096 --> 00:06:13.478
up because my breast is getting harder and
00:06:13.519 --> 00:06:14.358
it's getting dark.
00:06:14.420 --> 00:06:15.920
And she went back to the doctor and
00:06:16.396 --> 00:06:17.336
That's when they decided,
00:06:17.357 --> 00:06:18.637
they said she was too young.
00:06:18.677 --> 00:06:19.117
And I'm like,
00:06:19.257 --> 00:06:21.579
remember your grandmother died from this
00:06:21.598 --> 00:06:22.199
cancer.
00:06:22.680 --> 00:06:23.439
And she told them,
00:06:23.500 --> 00:06:25.000
and she was able to get her date
00:06:25.060 --> 00:06:28.562
moved up closer and she got her mammogram
00:06:28.601 --> 00:06:28.862
done.
00:06:28.901 --> 00:06:30.903
And when she got her mammogram done and
00:06:31.642 --> 00:06:32.384
was it your,
00:06:32.644 --> 00:06:34.204
what did they send you for biopsy?
00:06:34.225 --> 00:06:36.165
They sent her for a biopsy after that.
00:06:36.586 --> 00:06:38.146
And that's when they found out what she
00:06:38.185 --> 00:06:38.505
had.
00:06:38.625 --> 00:06:40.206
I wasn't here when it happened.
00:06:40.706 --> 00:06:42.408
I was actually traveling with a family
00:06:42.468 --> 00:06:44.788
member for a family member service.
00:06:45.612 --> 00:06:46.913
And she called and said, mom,
00:06:46.932 --> 00:06:48.495
they have my day for Tuesday.
00:06:48.514 --> 00:06:49.795
So I said, okay, I'm coming back.
00:06:49.836 --> 00:06:51.656
So I came back and we went together.
00:06:52.218 --> 00:06:53.718
And before we went in,
00:06:54.360 --> 00:06:56.380
we're from a very spiritual family.
00:06:56.401 --> 00:06:59.403
So of course we went in strong and
00:06:59.444 --> 00:07:00.884
we went in knowing that God is the
00:07:00.944 --> 00:07:02.305
person that we're putting before us,
00:07:02.365 --> 00:07:04.148
regardless of what the results were.
00:07:04.648 --> 00:07:06.149
And when they told us what it was,
00:07:06.230 --> 00:07:07.711
I think she was a little nervous because
00:07:07.971 --> 00:07:08.992
she's thirty years old,
00:07:09.031 --> 00:07:09.892
just turned thirty.
00:07:10.392 --> 00:07:12.375
And to hear something like that is like,
00:07:13.812 --> 00:07:14.711
Why me?
00:07:15.093 --> 00:07:15.973
But at the same time,
00:07:15.992 --> 00:07:17.252
she stepped back and she said,
00:07:17.273 --> 00:07:18.454
you know what, where am I?
00:07:18.553 --> 00:07:19.334
What stage am I?
00:07:19.353 --> 00:07:21.035
And she started asking questions.
00:07:21.495 --> 00:07:23.055
And because my needs had passed from
00:07:23.136 --> 00:07:24.076
something different,
00:07:24.636 --> 00:07:26.976
we became more of advocate for ourselves
00:07:27.117 --> 00:07:29.338
and were able to ask more questions and
00:07:29.398 --> 00:07:31.218
push for other things to be done so
00:07:31.238 --> 00:07:32.639
she could get her treatment done at a
00:07:32.680 --> 00:07:33.519
faster pace.
00:07:35.326 --> 00:07:35.425
Well,
00:07:35.485 --> 00:07:36.846
thank God you guys were advocates for
00:07:36.867 --> 00:07:37.387
yourself.
00:07:37.648 --> 00:07:38.329
Absolutely.
00:07:38.348 --> 00:07:40.471
Chantel,
00:07:40.511 --> 00:07:42.872
what treatment did you decide that you opt
00:07:42.913 --> 00:07:44.875
to go with for treating your breast
00:07:44.975 --> 00:07:45.415
cancer?
00:07:45.956 --> 00:07:48.718
So I went through chemo and radiation.
00:07:49.478 --> 00:07:51.701
So my chemo was supposed to originally,
00:07:51.761 --> 00:07:53.802
I think it was supposed to be like
00:07:53.882 --> 00:07:56.725
six months, but after I had my surgery,
00:07:57.314 --> 00:07:59.836
They said that it completely shrunk a lot,
00:08:00.016 --> 00:08:01.636
like majority of it,
00:08:01.675 --> 00:08:04.276
but they found a little residue left when
00:08:04.317 --> 00:08:05.617
they did my mastectomy.
00:08:06.297 --> 00:08:08.958
So they extended my chemo treatment
00:08:09.278 --> 00:08:10.017
because of that,
00:08:10.137 --> 00:08:12.077
even though they had did the mastectomy,
00:08:12.098 --> 00:08:13.778
because they said that there can be a
00:08:13.838 --> 00:08:16.098
little breast tissue left because they
00:08:16.139 --> 00:08:16.759
don't always,
00:08:17.259 --> 00:08:18.819
they don't a hundred percent guarantee
00:08:18.839 --> 00:08:20.439
they could get all the breast tissue.
00:08:21.060 --> 00:08:24.300
So, and then I did radiation as well.
00:08:24.420 --> 00:08:24.761
Okay.
00:08:26.317 --> 00:08:28.338
During your treatment, I'm sorry, Karen,
00:08:28.379 --> 00:08:29.499
but while you're talking about your
00:08:29.519 --> 00:08:30.298
treatment sis,
00:08:30.899 --> 00:08:32.558
I know a lot of people always probably
00:08:32.719 --> 00:08:33.778
ask you more than not,
00:08:33.839 --> 00:08:34.639
how are you doing?
00:08:35.120 --> 00:08:36.299
How are you doing going through this
00:08:36.340 --> 00:08:36.879
process?
00:08:37.440 --> 00:08:39.980
But what is one question you think people
00:08:40.000 --> 00:08:48.841
should have asked you that they didn't?
00:08:48.881 --> 00:08:50.062
To be honest,
00:08:51.822 --> 00:08:53.322
I feel like I had so much different
00:08:53.363 --> 00:08:54.682
questions to the point that people
00:08:56.919 --> 00:09:01.282
yeah literally um but i think some for
00:09:01.322 --> 00:09:03.543
me to be honest the whole how you're
00:09:03.582 --> 00:09:06.543
doing thing was kind of tab it was
00:09:06.563 --> 00:09:08.125
kind of like i don't know like what
00:09:08.144 --> 00:09:09.264
do you want me to tell you like
00:09:09.846 --> 00:09:11.866
i don't know how i'm doing um i'm
00:09:11.907 --> 00:09:14.967
just going but through the process there
00:09:15.008 --> 00:09:17.168
was one of my co-workers she's an older
00:09:17.188 --> 00:09:18.908
lady she went through breast cancer right
00:09:18.928 --> 00:09:21.370
before me she was in remission so i
00:09:21.410 --> 00:09:21.990
called her
00:09:23.140 --> 00:09:24.841
And she kind of kept me on a
00:09:24.881 --> 00:09:25.523
straight and narrow.
00:09:25.562 --> 00:09:26.143
And she was like,
00:09:26.163 --> 00:09:27.504
people are going to say this and people
00:09:27.524 --> 00:09:28.264
are going to say that.
00:09:28.284 --> 00:09:31.006
People are going to give you remedies.
00:09:31.047 --> 00:09:32.508
People are going to, you know,
00:09:32.587 --> 00:09:33.589
all types of things.
00:09:33.729 --> 00:09:35.970
And they haven't been through it.
00:09:36.831 --> 00:09:39.192
How many people told you to boil soursop
00:09:39.232 --> 00:09:39.712
leaves?
00:09:40.113 --> 00:09:40.734
Everybody.
00:09:41.594 --> 00:09:43.635
One of my uncles brought a whole bag
00:09:43.655 --> 00:09:44.976
from Florida for me.
00:09:45.017 --> 00:09:49.879
My husband had prostate cancer and I had
00:09:49.940 --> 00:09:50.860
a few friends.
00:09:51.466 --> 00:09:55.610
I drank it like my aunt in England
00:09:55.650 --> 00:09:56.030
called me.
00:09:56.051 --> 00:09:57.072
She was like, drink it.
00:09:57.232 --> 00:09:58.094
So I boiled it.
00:09:58.153 --> 00:09:59.235
I drank it.
00:09:59.254 --> 00:10:00.196
I still drink it now,
00:10:00.235 --> 00:10:02.057
but I make it into like a sweet
00:10:02.097 --> 00:10:02.379
tea.
00:10:02.458 --> 00:10:04.380
I put agave in there and just drink
00:10:04.400 --> 00:10:06.263
it like juice instead of the tea.
00:10:06.923 --> 00:10:10.548
But I would say pretty much
00:10:11.921 --> 00:10:13.182
like there was a couple of people that
00:10:13.202 --> 00:10:14.783
i went through it with that they were
00:10:14.903 --> 00:10:17.927
older but one lady she told me when
00:10:18.067 --> 00:10:19.589
i you know we were just talking and
00:10:19.609 --> 00:10:21.431
she was like you know if jesus went
00:10:21.451 --> 00:10:23.472
through what he went through who are we
00:10:24.053 --> 00:10:25.875
and ever since then i kind of just
00:10:26.816 --> 00:10:28.057
it is what it is you know i
00:10:28.138 --> 00:10:31.660
know that's right one of my pastors used
00:10:31.681 --> 00:10:34.043
to say um
00:10:34.474 --> 00:10:35.095
He would say,
00:10:35.455 --> 00:10:37.636
when you're going through something and
00:10:38.398 --> 00:10:40.519
people say, Lord, why me?
00:10:41.440 --> 00:10:45.783
And his response is, why not you?
00:10:45.804 --> 00:10:47.086
You got somebody else you want to
00:10:47.105 --> 00:10:48.547
volunteer to go through what you're going
00:10:48.567 --> 00:10:48.866
through?
00:10:49.967 --> 00:10:50.269
God,
00:10:50.849 --> 00:10:53.091
you're going through something for a
00:10:53.130 --> 00:10:53.451
reason.
00:10:53.471 --> 00:10:56.134
And not that your cancer was to serve
00:10:56.153 --> 00:10:59.236
a purpose, but he brought you through.
00:11:00.188 --> 00:11:03.153
And that faith is what carried you
00:11:03.493 --> 00:11:05.274
through.
00:11:05.315 --> 00:11:06.716
I'm sure you'd have much rather not have
00:11:06.756 --> 00:11:09.961
had the cancer and still have the faith.
00:11:10.380 --> 00:11:13.183
But, you know, just like when you say,
00:11:13.244 --> 00:11:13.725
why not?
00:11:13.845 --> 00:11:14.365
Why me?
00:11:14.426 --> 00:11:14.926
Why me?
00:11:14.985 --> 00:11:16.447
Why not me?
00:11:16.808 --> 00:11:18.049
Because, God, I got you.
00:11:18.129 --> 00:11:18.730
You got me.
00:11:19.910 --> 00:11:21.312
And I know that you're with me as
00:11:21.392 --> 00:11:22.753
I'm walking through this and you're
00:11:22.793 --> 00:11:23.932
carrying me through this.
00:11:24.013 --> 00:11:26.594
I always think about that when I'm going
00:11:26.614 --> 00:11:28.615
through something and I'm lamenting about
00:11:28.674 --> 00:11:30.735
the thing that I'm going through.
00:11:31.056 --> 00:11:31.216
Like,
00:11:31.256 --> 00:11:32.557
do I have somebody else I want to
00:11:32.576 --> 00:11:34.677
volunteer to go through this?
00:11:34.738 --> 00:11:35.818
Right now, I probably would.
00:11:35.859 --> 00:11:38.080
But, you know, it's just...
00:11:41.610 --> 00:11:42.230
Anyway, I digress.
00:11:42.250 --> 00:11:43.049
But there is,
00:11:43.070 --> 00:11:44.250
so sorry to cut you off.
00:11:44.270 --> 00:11:46.071
There's one thing when you asked me that
00:11:46.110 --> 00:11:46.770
question, Kat.
00:11:46.850 --> 00:11:49.572
So like everybody, you know, what can I,
00:11:49.731 --> 00:11:50.831
how are you feeling?
00:11:51.352 --> 00:11:53.232
I think one of the biggest things for
00:11:53.293 --> 00:11:55.014
me in that time, like, you know,
00:11:56.298 --> 00:11:58.059
one of my friends the day before chemo
00:11:58.100 --> 00:12:00.624
she brought me you know she hasn't been
00:12:00.644 --> 00:12:01.784
through any of this she just brought me
00:12:01.825 --> 00:12:04.347
like a heated blanket like a whole bunch
00:12:04.388 --> 00:12:06.010
of random stuff for the day before i
00:12:06.030 --> 00:12:07.613
started chemo like she's like i don't know
00:12:07.633 --> 00:12:09.215
what you need like her her mom and
00:12:09.254 --> 00:12:11.618
sister came just brought me a bunch of
00:12:11.658 --> 00:12:13.299
stuff and then one of my other best
00:12:13.340 --> 00:12:13.740
friends
00:12:14.480 --> 00:12:15.861
It was really a surprise.
00:12:15.902 --> 00:12:18.562
He came to my house one day and,
00:12:19.104 --> 00:12:20.543
you know, just to see me.
00:12:20.583 --> 00:12:22.806
And then he took off his jacket and
00:12:22.846 --> 00:12:25.287
he had a big breast cancer tattoo that
00:12:25.307 --> 00:12:25.787
he got.
00:12:26.106 --> 00:12:27.528
And then he put a Bible verse.
00:12:28.349 --> 00:12:29.589
And I was like,
00:12:30.210 --> 00:12:31.190
my friends like me for real.
00:12:31.210 --> 00:12:31.289
Yeah.
00:12:35.048 --> 00:12:38.269
I think it's more about the support and
00:12:38.330 --> 00:12:40.551
not necessarily the calling and checking
00:12:40.610 --> 00:12:41.711
up on how you're doing.
00:12:41.871 --> 00:12:43.952
It's more of the gestures that you
00:12:44.052 --> 00:12:46.714
actually see where people are willing to
00:12:46.774 --> 00:12:48.375
do stuff for you even when you don't
00:12:48.534 --> 00:12:48.835
ask.
00:12:49.677 --> 00:12:54.720
And so you're diagnosed at thirty when the
00:12:54.879 --> 00:12:58.321
median age for breast cancer diagnosis in
00:12:58.341 --> 00:13:01.462
the United States is between sixty-two and
00:13:01.543 --> 00:13:02.884
sixty-four years old,
00:13:02.943 --> 00:13:05.164
according to data from the National Breast
00:13:05.205 --> 00:13:06.985
Cancer Foundation.
00:13:07.605 --> 00:13:11.408
What would you say to younger women?
00:13:12.929 --> 00:13:16.095
right now who have not had mammograms or
00:13:16.195 --> 00:13:19.360
who maybe have not been as consistent
00:13:19.500 --> 00:13:21.363
about having mammograms?
00:13:21.423 --> 00:13:24.427
What would you say to those young women
00:13:24.467 --> 00:13:24.808
right now?
00:13:25.663 --> 00:13:27.783
I will say advocate for yourself.
00:13:28.725 --> 00:13:31.485
Know your body for sure.
00:13:31.504 --> 00:13:33.605
You have to understand your body to know
00:13:33.644 --> 00:13:35.125
if something's actually going on.
00:13:35.166 --> 00:13:37.485
You can't just listen to what a doctor
00:13:37.505 --> 00:13:41.147
say because when you start going down a
00:13:41.187 --> 00:13:42.346
rabbit hole when you find out certain
00:13:42.386 --> 00:13:42.706
things.
00:13:42.826 --> 00:13:44.067
I did go down a rabbit hole and
00:13:44.126 --> 00:13:46.868
I found out there's a lot of females
00:13:46.908 --> 00:13:49.268
that were like me that pretty much they
00:13:49.307 --> 00:13:51.168
were in their thirties and the doctor was
00:13:51.208 --> 00:13:52.369
like, no, no, no, no, no.
00:13:53.389 --> 00:13:55.931
And some of them found out too late.
00:13:55.971 --> 00:13:57.131
Some people passed away.
00:13:57.192 --> 00:13:58.613
Some people didn't, you know,
00:13:59.153 --> 00:14:02.196
and it's like one of my somebody I
00:14:02.216 --> 00:14:04.278
work with when I found I had just
00:14:04.298 --> 00:14:06.219
started a new job and I was telling
00:14:06.239 --> 00:14:07.419
them that I had to go on leave.
00:14:07.941 --> 00:14:08.961
And she pretty much was like,
00:14:09.081 --> 00:14:09.981
I have breast cancer, too.
00:14:10.001 --> 00:14:11.523
And I was like, you do.
00:14:11.744 --> 00:14:12.504
And she was like, yes,
00:14:12.543 --> 00:14:15.086
but only thing is because she's relatively
00:14:15.105 --> 00:14:15.586
young, too.
00:14:15.667 --> 00:14:16.006
She was like,
00:14:16.126 --> 00:14:17.148
I have to live with mine.
00:14:17.187 --> 00:14:18.168
Mine is inoperable.
00:14:18.849 --> 00:14:21.230
So she has to take a pill every
00:14:21.250 --> 00:14:22.471
day for the rest of her life.
00:14:22.971 --> 00:14:24.974
And pretty much, she's like, I don't know.
00:14:25.073 --> 00:14:26.394
I'm basically a ticking time bomb,
00:14:26.414 --> 00:14:26.955
pretty much.
00:14:27.836 --> 00:14:29.716
So she just lives her life to the
00:14:29.736 --> 00:14:30.878
fullest now, she says.
00:14:31.458 --> 00:14:33.880
But that's when I realized there's a lot
00:14:33.961 --> 00:14:36.363
of us, really, like,
00:14:36.982 --> 00:14:38.524
I don't know where the research is coming
00:14:38.543 --> 00:14:38.683
from,
00:14:38.703 --> 00:14:41.225
because now it's a lot of people under
00:14:41.265 --> 00:14:43.347
six feet that are being diagnosed.
00:14:43.368 --> 00:14:45.409
So I just want to share.
00:14:45.470 --> 00:14:45.889
Go ahead, Kat.
00:14:46.174 --> 00:14:48.796
That speaks to why Survivor Legacy is so
00:14:48.855 --> 00:14:49.316
important.
00:14:49.436 --> 00:14:50.035
So Michelle,
00:14:50.076 --> 00:14:53.256
can you dive into the origin and why
00:14:53.277 --> 00:14:55.197
it's so important and what resources you
00:14:55.236 --> 00:14:56.577
provide?
00:14:56.597 --> 00:14:57.038
Sure.
00:14:57.538 --> 00:14:59.238
So Survivor Legacy was born,
00:14:59.298 --> 00:15:00.278
as you said earlier,
00:15:00.317 --> 00:15:04.219
from a family's pain to now advocating for
00:15:04.379 --> 00:15:04.840
others.
00:15:05.299 --> 00:15:06.620
So my niece, Nancy,
00:15:07.226 --> 00:15:08.506
affectionately known as Nancy.
00:15:08.527 --> 00:15:09.868
Her name is Latoya Brown.
00:15:10.347 --> 00:15:11.327
She was thirty nine.
00:15:11.388 --> 00:15:13.528
She was like Chantel's oldest sister.
00:15:13.609 --> 00:15:16.429
They were with she was here with us
00:15:16.470 --> 00:15:17.490
like her own daughter.
00:15:18.431 --> 00:15:21.231
She's truly one of the person that brought
00:15:21.292 --> 00:15:24.552
this together the last week of her life.
00:15:25.273 --> 00:15:27.014
I ended up staying in Florida with her.
00:15:27.053 --> 00:15:28.375
She was in Tampa General.
00:15:28.715 --> 00:15:29.575
Chantel went down.
00:15:29.595 --> 00:15:31.456
We were all taking turns as family to
00:15:31.495 --> 00:15:33.496
go be with her and take her to
00:15:33.557 --> 00:15:34.777
treatments and everything.
00:15:35.557 --> 00:15:37.379
And throughout the whole process,
00:15:37.418 --> 00:15:39.058
her mom was there with her and the
00:15:39.078 --> 00:15:40.299
doctors kept telling her,
00:15:40.759 --> 00:15:41.681
Oh, she's OK.
00:15:41.701 --> 00:15:42.500
She's going to live.
00:15:42.542 --> 00:15:43.241
She's young.
00:15:43.282 --> 00:15:44.543
She has all of this.
00:15:44.982 --> 00:15:45.663
And I kept saying,
00:15:45.703 --> 00:15:47.524
I'm not very comfortable with the things
00:15:47.544 --> 00:15:48.485
that I'm hearing.
00:15:48.986 --> 00:15:49.506
And of course,
00:15:49.527 --> 00:15:50.727
her mom is a little older,
00:15:50.768 --> 00:15:52.269
and she came from Jamaica at a later
00:15:52.308 --> 00:15:52.830
stage.
00:15:52.870 --> 00:15:53.549
So for her,
00:15:53.570 --> 00:15:55.030
a doctor telling her something,
00:15:55.351 --> 00:15:56.452
she just accepts it.
00:15:56.493 --> 00:15:56.572
Yeah.
00:15:57.173 --> 00:15:58.235
And I kept saying to her,
00:15:58.274 --> 00:15:59.296
I want to come down.
00:15:59.355 --> 00:15:59.996
And she's like, no,
00:16:00.037 --> 00:16:01.519
you don't have to because the doctors say
00:16:01.558 --> 00:16:02.801
this and they say that.
00:16:03.302 --> 00:16:03.761
However,
00:16:03.942 --> 00:16:05.384
one day I was just home and I
00:16:05.445 --> 00:16:07.648
remember it was a working day and I
00:16:07.687 --> 00:16:08.408
just didn't get up.
00:16:08.448 --> 00:16:09.890
Chantel was working from home.
00:16:10.552 --> 00:16:11.812
And she came up and she's like, mom,
00:16:11.832 --> 00:16:12.934
why are you not going to work?
00:16:12.975 --> 00:16:13.456
I'm like, hmm.
00:16:14.537 --> 00:16:15.477
I'm going to go in late.
00:16:15.518 --> 00:16:17.339
Didn't want to tell Chantel that Nancy was
00:16:17.379 --> 00:16:18.580
so much on my mind.
00:16:19.019 --> 00:16:20.160
And I got up and I put my
00:16:20.201 --> 00:16:22.042
gym clothes on to go to work and
00:16:22.121 --> 00:16:23.062
I left the house.
00:16:23.082 --> 00:16:24.703
And as soon as I left the house,
00:16:24.764 --> 00:16:25.544
I went to the gym.
00:16:25.565 --> 00:16:26.644
And when I got to the gym,
00:16:27.166 --> 00:16:28.586
the gym, I couldn't work out.
00:16:28.626 --> 00:16:30.327
So I went to my office and I
00:16:30.368 --> 00:16:32.109
went to get some tea and my phone
00:16:32.149 --> 00:16:33.730
rang and it was Tampa General.
00:16:33.769 --> 00:16:34.750
So I'm like, oh, it's Nancy.
00:16:35.370 --> 00:16:36.371
And it wasn't Nancy,
00:16:36.451 --> 00:16:38.695
it was her doctor calling me to tell
00:16:38.754 --> 00:16:42.099
me to make preparations because her time
00:16:42.139 --> 00:16:42.578
has come.
00:16:42.599 --> 00:16:44.000
I'm like, what are you saying?
00:16:44.061 --> 00:16:46.222
I just talked to her last night and
00:16:46.243 --> 00:16:46.803
she said,
00:16:48.456 --> 00:16:49.837
No, she's in ICU.
00:16:50.378 --> 00:16:52.419
And her mom had just left that Friday.
00:16:53.160 --> 00:16:55.844
And I said, okay, don't do anything.
00:16:55.923 --> 00:16:56.764
I'm on my way.
00:16:56.825 --> 00:16:57.765
And I got in my car.
00:16:57.806 --> 00:16:58.427
I cautioned her.
00:16:58.466 --> 00:17:00.028
I said, hey, I'm heading to Florida.
00:17:00.690 --> 00:17:02.711
They called and said, Nancy's in ICU.
00:17:02.772 --> 00:17:04.753
And her fiance at the time,
00:17:04.794 --> 00:17:06.035
he came and he said, okay,
00:17:06.695 --> 00:17:07.156
I'm going to,
00:17:08.208 --> 00:17:09.229
take my car to you.
00:17:09.269 --> 00:17:11.390
And Chantel packed her bag, went down.
00:17:11.911 --> 00:17:13.010
And when I got there,
00:17:13.291 --> 00:17:15.093
she was up and she knew me and
00:17:15.133 --> 00:17:16.574
she was conscious and everything.
00:17:16.594 --> 00:17:17.835
She felt like she had a dream.
00:17:18.375 --> 00:17:19.395
But when I went there,
00:17:19.516 --> 00:17:20.836
I realized there was a lot of this
00:17:20.936 --> 00:17:23.679
perisy in the African-American community
00:17:23.699 --> 00:17:23.759
of
00:17:24.138 --> 00:17:25.861
the knowledge of how much we know and
00:17:25.901 --> 00:17:28.162
what we don't know and also the support
00:17:28.182 --> 00:17:28.883
that we get.
00:17:29.242 --> 00:17:31.484
And more significantly,
00:17:31.565 --> 00:17:33.326
in the lung cancer community,
00:17:33.386 --> 00:17:34.627
when you have lung cancer,
00:17:34.647 --> 00:17:37.609
you're treated as though you bought that
00:17:37.650 --> 00:17:38.730
cancer in yourself.
00:17:39.270 --> 00:17:40.372
Nancy, our case,
00:17:40.392 --> 00:17:42.134
she had small cell lung cancer,
00:17:42.153 --> 00:17:43.634
which is not of a smoker.
00:17:43.894 --> 00:17:46.336
It's a nonsmoker, small cell lung cancer.
00:17:46.657 --> 00:17:47.657
She never smoked.
00:17:48.318 --> 00:17:49.380
So because of that,
00:17:49.640 --> 00:17:51.361
Survivor Legacy was birthed.
00:17:52.301 --> 00:17:56.624
I was driving one day from finding doctors
00:17:56.644 --> 00:17:58.183
for Chantel, different oncologists.
00:17:58.223 --> 00:18:00.464
We were interviewing doctors, oncologists.
00:18:00.944 --> 00:18:02.685
And on our way back, I'm like, Chantel,
00:18:03.165 --> 00:18:06.688
now that you know, with you having cancer,
00:18:06.708 --> 00:18:08.107
it becomes even more personal.
00:18:08.167 --> 00:18:10.548
I promised Nancy I would do something in
00:18:10.608 --> 00:18:12.630
her memory and keep her name alive.
00:18:14.290 --> 00:18:14.590
But...
00:18:15.528 --> 00:18:16.769
I don't know what to name it and
00:18:16.829 --> 00:18:17.671
what to do.
00:18:18.551 --> 00:18:19.772
Should I call it Chantel?
00:18:19.792 --> 00:18:22.535
I should, Judy, Chantel and Nancy.
00:18:22.555 --> 00:18:23.455
She's like, why?
00:18:23.556 --> 00:18:24.656
And Judy, just so you know,
00:18:24.696 --> 00:18:26.617
is my cousin that I was raised with
00:18:26.657 --> 00:18:27.538
as my sister.
00:18:27.578 --> 00:18:30.500
And she ended up having breast cancer over
00:18:30.560 --> 00:18:31.803
twenty years ago and she's been a
00:18:31.843 --> 00:18:32.522
survivor.
00:18:33.023 --> 00:18:34.944
Four months after Chantel was diagnosed,
00:18:35.005 --> 00:18:36.866
Judy was also diagnosed with something
00:18:36.886 --> 00:18:37.106
called
00:18:37.662 --> 00:18:40.163
vulvar cancer which is a very rare cancer
00:18:40.624 --> 00:18:43.086
it's maybe one in every two thousand
00:18:43.145 --> 00:18:45.928
female that will get it so it's very
00:18:46.048 --> 00:18:49.250
un it's a very uncommon type of cancer
00:18:49.911 --> 00:18:51.491
she said no mom why would you want
00:18:51.511 --> 00:18:54.433
to call it chantal nancy and judy that's
00:18:54.473 --> 00:18:56.434
very narrow-minded and more like for your
00:18:56.515 --> 00:18:58.415
family if you really want to do something
00:18:58.836 --> 00:19:00.758
that will keep legacy alive i think you
00:19:00.778 --> 00:19:02.138
should say survivor legacy
00:19:02.884 --> 00:19:04.164
I said, survivor legacy,
00:19:04.224 --> 00:19:05.986
why would I say survivor legacy when
00:19:06.026 --> 00:19:07.186
Nancy's not here?
00:19:07.707 --> 00:19:08.367
And she said, mom,
00:19:08.407 --> 00:19:10.249
but Nancy have two children that's still
00:19:10.308 --> 00:19:10.648
here.
00:19:11.109 --> 00:19:12.549
We are here as her family.
00:19:13.270 --> 00:19:15.432
And she said,
00:19:15.571 --> 00:19:17.574
you and my daughter would be my survivor
00:19:17.614 --> 00:19:18.934
if anything happened to me.
00:19:18.954 --> 00:19:20.836
I said, well, nothing is going to happen.
00:19:20.875 --> 00:19:21.276
She said,
00:19:21.676 --> 00:19:23.317
I think you should say survivor legacy,
00:19:23.337 --> 00:19:25.618
where it's more exclusive to everyone and
00:19:25.679 --> 00:19:27.480
not inclusive just to your family.
00:19:28.040 --> 00:19:29.942
And immediately I went to register
00:19:30.241 --> 00:19:31.063
survivor legacy.
00:19:33.663 --> 00:19:37.345
through her forward thinking.
00:19:37.905 --> 00:19:39.685
And what are some of the resources you
00:19:39.726 --> 00:19:40.385
provide?
00:19:41.967 --> 00:19:43.487
So what we do, we educate.
00:19:43.948 --> 00:19:45.248
Most importantly, we educate.
00:19:45.268 --> 00:19:46.587
We try to go out in the community.
00:19:46.627 --> 00:19:48.249
We have educational classes.
00:19:48.689 --> 00:19:50.809
So we partner with different medical
00:19:50.849 --> 00:19:52.890
facilities like Northside, Emory,
00:19:54.611 --> 00:19:55.611
Ronald Reagan Screen,
00:19:55.651 --> 00:19:57.551
and a few places that we partner with.
00:19:58.031 --> 00:20:00.292
And we also support
00:20:03.003 --> 00:20:07.046
with local nurses and doctors that can be
00:20:07.086 --> 00:20:10.968
of resources to our caregivers.
00:20:11.208 --> 00:20:12.828
So we have the educational classes.
00:20:12.848 --> 00:20:13.930
We'll do those once a quarter,
00:20:13.970 --> 00:20:15.490
either online or in person.
00:20:15.770 --> 00:20:17.771
We also have resources for those that
00:20:17.811 --> 00:20:20.432
doesn't have resources to go to the doctor
00:20:20.452 --> 00:20:21.094
and know how.
00:20:21.473 --> 00:20:22.653
We will help them with that.
00:20:23.015 --> 00:20:25.115
We will also refer them to medical
00:20:25.135 --> 00:20:26.496
facility that can help them at a
00:20:26.536 --> 00:20:27.517
discounted rate.
00:20:28.176 --> 00:20:30.357
And we also work with survivors with
00:20:30.478 --> 00:20:30.959
counseling.
00:20:30.999 --> 00:20:32.900
We have a pastor in our group on
00:20:32.940 --> 00:20:33.480
our board.
00:20:33.799 --> 00:20:35.401
We also have a nurse,
00:20:35.560 --> 00:20:36.500
two nurses on our board,
00:20:36.560 --> 00:20:38.382
nurse oncology that can tell you about the
00:20:38.422 --> 00:20:41.163
navigation process if you are diagnosed.
00:20:41.584 --> 00:20:43.924
And we also have a gynecologist that we
00:20:43.984 --> 00:20:46.987
work with and she deals more with natural
00:20:47.027 --> 00:20:47.487
things.
00:20:47.846 --> 00:20:50.008
What do you do before you're diagnosed?
00:20:50.048 --> 00:20:52.088
What can we do to prevent cancer?
00:20:52.449 --> 00:20:54.309
Which is the most important one,
00:20:54.369 --> 00:20:55.570
the most crucial one.
00:20:55.971 --> 00:20:56.611
So for us,
00:20:56.651 --> 00:20:57.991
the biggest part of what we do,
00:20:58.011 --> 00:20:59.211
and we also do screening.
00:20:59.392 --> 00:21:00.752
I almost forget that part.
00:21:01.173 --> 00:21:03.593
We partner with Northside and they allow
00:21:03.613 --> 00:21:03.653
us,
00:21:04.114 --> 00:21:05.933
Tabernacle International Church in
00:21:05.973 --> 00:21:09.015
Lawrenceville has given us the leverage of
00:21:09.154 --> 00:21:11.276
using their church to do screening.
00:21:11.715 --> 00:21:13.857
And that is done free for the community,
00:21:13.877 --> 00:21:15.519
whoever want to register and come in when
00:21:15.558 --> 00:21:16.279
we're doing it.
00:21:16.779 --> 00:21:19.162
We've had so far three screenings for the
00:21:19.201 --> 00:21:19.542
year.
00:21:19.583 --> 00:21:21.544
So whenever we have it and the hospital
00:21:21.584 --> 00:21:22.045
is ready,
00:21:22.384 --> 00:21:24.006
we go ahead and schedule those for people
00:21:24.026 --> 00:21:25.867
to come in that cannot afford to get
00:21:25.928 --> 00:21:26.367
screening.
00:21:26.387 --> 00:21:28.450
What's your website?
00:21:31.214 --> 00:21:35.596
It's www.survivorlegacy.com.
00:21:35.796 --> 00:21:37.676
And we're also on social media.
00:21:38.076 --> 00:21:39.538
It's right here in front of us,
00:21:40.097 --> 00:21:41.577
survivorlegacy.com.
00:21:41.617 --> 00:21:43.298
We also have Instagram.
00:21:43.719 --> 00:21:46.619
We also have Facebook.
00:21:46.740 --> 00:21:49.060
And we also have YouTube.
00:21:49.461 --> 00:21:50.340
And I'm sorry,
00:21:50.441 --> 00:21:52.862
I'm mistaken with my Survivor Legacy.
00:21:52.882 --> 00:21:54.021
Chantel, just correct me.
00:21:54.061 --> 00:21:55.742
I left the ink off.
00:21:55.762 --> 00:22:00.223
So it's www.survivorlegacyinc.com.
00:22:04.108 --> 00:22:04.568
Yeah,
00:22:04.588 --> 00:22:07.792
so for those of you that are listening
00:22:09.233 --> 00:22:13.679
and are not watching us on video, again,
00:22:13.719 --> 00:22:19.905
that is www.survivorlegacyinc.com.
00:22:20.358 --> 00:22:21.920
where you can find out more information
00:22:21.960 --> 00:22:24.941
about the organization and the resources
00:22:24.980 --> 00:22:26.101
that they provide.
00:22:26.701 --> 00:22:30.123
And you have a run walk coming up,
00:22:30.163 --> 00:22:30.702
is that right?
00:22:31.202 --> 00:22:31.962
Yes, we do.
00:22:32.002 --> 00:22:33.443
We have a five K coming up,
00:22:33.523 --> 00:22:35.244
lung and breast cancer five K,
00:22:35.265 --> 00:22:36.884
but of course everyone is welcome.
00:22:36.904 --> 00:22:38.645
The entire community in Lawrenceville is
00:22:38.705 --> 00:22:39.185
welcome.
00:22:39.705 --> 00:22:41.406
We had it last year and it was
00:22:41.507 --> 00:22:43.208
well attended on November first.
00:22:43.248 --> 00:22:45.969
It was freezing cold and the community
00:22:46.028 --> 00:22:47.769
really showed up and we're looking for the
00:22:47.828 --> 00:22:49.309
same or more this year.
00:22:49.869 --> 00:22:51.751
We're having some great speakers there.
00:22:51.791 --> 00:22:53.333
We'll have an oncologist that's going to
00:22:53.353 --> 00:22:54.874
be speaking on lung cancer.
00:22:55.354 --> 00:22:57.195
We'll have a nurse oncologist there.
00:22:57.615 --> 00:22:57.915
Again,
00:22:57.955 --> 00:22:59.557
we'll have a gynecologist there that's
00:22:59.577 --> 00:23:01.118
going to speak about what can we do
00:23:01.159 --> 00:23:02.119
to prevent cancer,
00:23:02.160 --> 00:23:03.780
what lifestyle we need to live,
00:23:04.161 --> 00:23:05.602
the things that we need to do.
00:23:05.721 --> 00:23:08.605
And we'll also have two survivors that's
00:23:08.625 --> 00:23:10.705
going to be sharing their stories with us.
00:23:11.307 --> 00:23:11.906
Oh, wow.
00:23:11.926 --> 00:23:12.807
That's amazing.
00:23:12.907 --> 00:23:15.670
And that runoff will be at Alexander Park
00:23:15.789 --> 00:23:17.892
on October the seventeenth at eight a.m.
00:23:18.378 --> 00:23:19.960
And if anyone is interested,
00:23:20.039 --> 00:23:22.721
please go to their website at
00:23:23.181 --> 00:23:26.682
survivorlegacyinc.com so you can register
00:23:26.762 --> 00:23:27.462
and sign up.
00:23:27.542 --> 00:23:29.044
And we do ask that, well,
00:23:29.084 --> 00:23:31.265
this organization asks that you register.
00:23:32.125 --> 00:23:33.246
So please sign up.
00:23:33.346 --> 00:23:35.006
It's definitely for a great cause.
00:23:35.346 --> 00:23:35.626
Yes.
00:23:35.886 --> 00:23:38.367
And we will also provide a direct link
00:23:38.428 --> 00:23:40.209
to the five K registration,
00:23:40.229 --> 00:23:41.969
which is on give butter.com.
00:23:42.789 --> 00:23:45.490
And that link will be provided on our
00:23:45.550 --> 00:23:47.731
website and also on
00:23:48.415 --> 00:23:51.058
the, uh, where the podcast will be posted.
00:23:51.078 --> 00:23:53.781
And so you can also sign up there
00:23:53.821 --> 00:23:56.224
for the five K, but, um,
00:23:56.826 --> 00:23:58.428
I also wanted to make sure that we
00:23:58.468 --> 00:24:00.710
give out some information cause you know,
00:24:01.070 --> 00:24:01.250
uh,
00:24:02.167 --> 00:24:03.567
conversation with Karen and Kat,
00:24:03.828 --> 00:24:06.288
where we're all about facts and dropping
00:24:06.449 --> 00:24:07.009
nuggets.
00:24:08.269 --> 00:24:11.070
Chantel was thirty when she was diagnosed,
00:24:11.090 --> 00:24:12.411
when her cancer was found.
00:24:12.750 --> 00:24:15.231
About ten percent of new breast cancer
00:24:15.271 --> 00:24:18.192
diagnoses occur in women under the age of
00:24:18.251 --> 00:24:19.012
forty five.
00:24:19.413 --> 00:24:21.732
So although the majority,
00:24:21.792 --> 00:24:24.233
the large portion of women who are
00:24:24.273 --> 00:24:26.115
diagnosed are between the ages of sixty
00:24:26.134 --> 00:24:27.015
two and sixty four,
00:24:27.634 --> 00:24:28.635
As we've shown,
00:24:29.057 --> 00:24:32.259
ten percent of new diagnoses are under the
00:24:32.460 --> 00:24:33.421
age of forty five,
00:24:33.480 --> 00:24:36.703
and those chances increase if you have a
00:24:36.784 --> 00:24:38.005
family history.
00:24:38.525 --> 00:24:41.048
And so and there's differences in in
00:24:42.429 --> 00:24:45.329
black and white women who are getting
00:24:45.369 --> 00:24:45.970
diagnosed.
00:24:46.269 --> 00:24:48.510
The median age of diagnosis tends to be
00:24:48.570 --> 00:24:50.770
younger for black women at around sixty to
00:24:50.810 --> 00:24:53.251
sixty two years of age.
00:24:53.491 --> 00:24:54.771
And for white women,
00:24:54.811 --> 00:24:57.752
the median age tends to range from sixty
00:24:57.792 --> 00:24:59.512
two to sixty six,
00:24:59.673 --> 00:25:02.153
as tracked by breast cancer dot org.
00:25:03.094 --> 00:25:05.315
And surprisingly enough,
00:25:07.076 --> 00:25:07.776
Approximately,
00:25:07.976 --> 00:25:09.997
one thousand fifty five women are
00:25:10.057 --> 00:25:12.278
diagnosed with breast cancer each day,
00:25:12.557 --> 00:25:15.578
day, day,
00:25:15.598 --> 00:25:18.560
which translates to a woman being
00:25:18.621 --> 00:25:21.442
diagnosed every two minutes.
00:25:21.541 --> 00:25:23.883
And that's from the breast cancer,
00:25:25.202 --> 00:25:27.483
the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
00:25:27.844 --> 00:25:29.244
So those are staggering numbers.
00:25:29.325 --> 00:25:32.365
And what we also know is that.
00:25:33.578 --> 00:25:37.221
Black women tend to get more aggressive
00:25:37.422 --> 00:25:41.185
forms of cancer at a higher rate than
00:25:41.306 --> 00:25:42.086
other races.
00:25:42.166 --> 00:25:46.230
So when we need you to be checking
00:25:46.830 --> 00:25:47.311
monthly.
00:25:49.314 --> 00:25:51.256
And if you have dense breasts,
00:25:52.037 --> 00:25:53.218
for those women who've been told that you
00:25:53.258 --> 00:25:54.199
have dense breasts,
00:25:54.578 --> 00:25:56.622
you need to also be asking for a
00:25:56.741 --> 00:25:59.785
second screening if your breasts are dense
00:25:59.805 --> 00:26:01.606
and they're not getting good imaging.
00:26:01.946 --> 00:26:03.848
That's an issue that I end up having
00:26:03.868 --> 00:26:04.210
to have,
00:26:04.250 --> 00:26:05.770
and sometimes we'll have to have that
00:26:05.851 --> 00:26:06.731
second screening.
00:26:07.712 --> 00:26:08.594
And so that's important.
00:26:08.794 --> 00:26:09.775
You likely wanted to say something,
00:26:09.795 --> 00:26:10.115
Michelle.
00:26:14.459 --> 00:26:16.720
No, I was listening to you.
00:26:16.780 --> 00:26:17.221
Go ahead.
00:26:17.361 --> 00:26:17.560
Sorry.
00:26:17.580 --> 00:26:19.862
But you were correct about the dense
00:26:19.981 --> 00:26:21.182
tissue in your breast.
00:26:23.604 --> 00:26:24.765
Was that one of the issues?
00:26:24.785 --> 00:26:25.305
I'm sorry.
00:26:25.384 --> 00:26:27.006
I was saying you're correct about the
00:26:27.026 --> 00:26:28.406
dense tissue in your breast.
00:26:30.508 --> 00:26:31.489
Did either one of you have...
00:26:31.509 --> 00:26:32.888
I know for sure with a lot of
00:26:32.949 --> 00:26:35.611
the survivors that we deal with,
00:26:36.330 --> 00:26:37.231
I think we're going in and out.
00:26:38.470 --> 00:26:39.990
I was saying I do have it.
00:26:40.550 --> 00:26:41.352
I've had it.
00:26:41.531 --> 00:26:44.093
However, in our community with survivors,
00:26:44.333 --> 00:26:46.294
that's what most of them were told
00:26:46.374 --> 00:26:48.474
initially is dense tissue.
00:26:48.795 --> 00:26:51.297
You don't have to worry about it unless
00:26:51.336 --> 00:26:52.596
you become an advocate.
00:26:52.616 --> 00:26:54.438
And that's where survivor legacy comes in.
00:26:54.478 --> 00:26:56.598
We're always having these either Facebook
00:26:56.720 --> 00:26:57.920
live in person,
00:26:57.940 --> 00:26:59.580
and we have the medical professionals
00:26:59.621 --> 00:27:00.000
there.
00:27:00.381 --> 00:27:02.502
They're telling you to ask your doctor to
00:27:02.542 --> 00:27:03.282
go further.
00:27:03.682 --> 00:27:05.064
Can we have an additional
00:27:06.772 --> 00:27:07.473
test done,
00:27:07.795 --> 00:27:11.682
especially if you have a family history.
00:27:13.565 --> 00:27:16.410
Ask for ultrasound, for example.
00:27:17.872 --> 00:27:20.436
Ask for them to have a history.
00:27:21.174 --> 00:27:21.734
That's right.
00:27:22.655 --> 00:27:24.136
If you do have the dense breasts,
00:27:24.336 --> 00:27:27.878
ask for that ultrasound after you've had
00:27:27.898 --> 00:27:28.858
your mammogram.
00:27:29.179 --> 00:27:30.440
And I know that there are women who
00:27:30.500 --> 00:27:33.682
don't want to do... It's uncomfortable.
00:27:33.721 --> 00:27:34.481
Let's just be honest.
00:27:34.521 --> 00:27:35.442
It is.
00:27:37.063 --> 00:27:38.023
It's uncomfortable,
00:27:38.084 --> 00:27:40.944
but better you be uncomfortable than to
00:27:41.045 --> 00:27:42.306
find out late stage.
00:27:42.546 --> 00:27:43.267
Go ahead, Catherine.
00:27:43.467 --> 00:27:45.428
You know, two things.
00:27:45.788 --> 00:27:46.008
One,
00:27:46.288 --> 00:27:47.489
I know we're saying that we need to
00:27:47.528 --> 00:27:49.250
get second opinions, but do we...
00:27:50.070 --> 00:27:53.231
Do we realize or factor in the cost
00:27:53.632 --> 00:27:56.693
associated with the charges for
00:27:56.733 --> 00:27:57.653
mammograms?
00:27:58.534 --> 00:28:00.654
Do we think that that's a barrier to
00:28:00.775 --> 00:28:04.896
women getting proper screening outside of
00:28:04.997 --> 00:28:08.038
what their insurance may allow for?
00:28:08.097 --> 00:28:11.398
Maybe because your insurance may allow one
00:28:11.479 --> 00:28:12.799
check that they cover.
00:28:13.079 --> 00:28:14.900
But if you have a second opinion,
00:28:15.259 --> 00:28:16.621
that may be something you may have to
00:28:16.641 --> 00:28:17.921
pay out of pocket.
00:28:18.000 --> 00:28:19.281
And then the second question is,
00:28:19.844 --> 00:28:21.724
How early should we start checking our
00:28:21.744 --> 00:28:24.984
breasts?
00:28:25.025 --> 00:28:25.506
And Kat,
00:28:25.566 --> 00:28:27.326
you're absolutely correct about that.
00:28:27.385 --> 00:28:28.685
I think a lot of people won't get
00:28:28.726 --> 00:28:31.126
a second opinion or won't ask their doctor
00:28:31.166 --> 00:28:32.567
to do a different screening because
00:28:32.607 --> 00:28:33.928
they're thinking it's the cost.
00:28:34.347 --> 00:28:36.028
But only one way for you to know
00:28:36.169 --> 00:28:37.909
is to ask and to try.
00:28:38.328 --> 00:28:40.049
And they have resources out there.
00:28:40.069 --> 00:28:41.329
And when you go to our events,
00:28:41.369 --> 00:28:42.650
we have medical professionals.
00:28:42.690 --> 00:28:43.069
Of course,
00:28:43.150 --> 00:28:44.730
I am not a medical professional.
00:28:45.191 --> 00:28:46.471
And that's why we go out and get
00:28:46.491 --> 00:28:47.652
the resources for you.
00:28:47.771 --> 00:28:49.532
And they will share different
00:28:49.633 --> 00:28:52.032
organizations that will help you to get
00:28:52.093 --> 00:28:54.594
those things done at a reduced or no
00:28:54.614 --> 00:28:57.615
cost based on your financial status and
00:28:57.654 --> 00:28:58.476
your work status.
00:28:58.635 --> 00:29:00.195
You will get those things done for you
00:29:00.215 --> 00:29:00.756
for free.
00:29:01.136 --> 00:29:01.717
And again,
00:29:02.096 --> 00:29:04.258
Northside have been so generous to us that
00:29:04.278 --> 00:29:05.397
they are willing to come out
00:29:05.817 --> 00:29:06.598
to Lawrenceville,
00:29:06.618 --> 00:29:08.579
to Gwinnett County and do free screenings.
00:29:09.020 --> 00:29:11.122
But just to get individuals to sign up,
00:29:11.221 --> 00:29:12.222
a lot of people,
00:29:12.323 --> 00:29:13.844
especially in the African-American
00:29:13.884 --> 00:29:14.565
community,
00:29:14.924 --> 00:29:16.705
you would be amazed that don't want to
00:29:16.746 --> 00:29:20.128
know if they are carrying the disease or
00:29:20.189 --> 00:29:20.729
they don't.
00:29:20.828 --> 00:29:22.510
They'd rather not to know.
00:29:22.911 --> 00:29:24.592
So for us, we're asking people,
00:29:24.632 --> 00:29:25.532
don't be afraid.
00:29:25.772 --> 00:29:27.374
No one that has cancer should have to
00:29:27.433 --> 00:29:28.134
walk alone.
00:29:28.575 --> 00:29:30.316
And if you don't have it,
00:29:30.396 --> 00:29:32.117
advocate for someone else and help.
00:29:32.137 --> 00:29:33.638
Yeah.
00:29:33.739 --> 00:29:34.859
And what's the youngest age?
00:29:38.883 --> 00:29:40.183
the youngest age for screening?
00:29:40.284 --> 00:29:42.125
From what I have seen,
00:29:42.326 --> 00:29:44.728
I have personally seen sixteen years old
00:29:44.768 --> 00:29:48.309
that have breast cancer from Survival
00:29:48.349 --> 00:29:48.711
Legacy,
00:29:48.750 --> 00:29:50.471
someone that reached out to us that's
00:29:50.551 --> 00:29:52.212
sixteen years old that lives in Augusta,
00:29:52.252 --> 00:29:52.713
Georgia.
00:29:53.193 --> 00:29:53.594
However,
00:29:53.875 --> 00:29:55.576
I have not seen a lot of those
00:29:55.615 --> 00:29:56.016
cases,
00:29:56.056 --> 00:29:57.698
but I'm sure there's quite a few of
00:29:57.738 --> 00:29:58.538
them out there.
00:29:58.959 --> 00:30:01.220
When Chantel was diagnosed and we sat with
00:30:01.240 --> 00:30:03.781
her oncologist and we asked him about that
00:30:03.821 --> 00:30:05.022
and he said to us, you know,
00:30:06.707 --> 00:30:08.728
to me now we're looking at this as
00:30:08.788 --> 00:30:11.269
a board overall and we're saying what is
00:30:11.309 --> 00:30:13.510
going on in the community the thirty
00:30:13.711 --> 00:30:16.212
thirty and under that's getting diagnosed
00:30:16.232 --> 00:30:17.472
with breast cancer it's becoming a
00:30:17.573 --> 00:30:20.255
pandemic and aggressive forms of
00:30:20.634 --> 00:30:23.557
aggressive forms yes and so kat um to
00:30:23.696 --> 00:30:26.739
answer your question i would say as soon
00:30:27.019 --> 00:30:30.661
as a young woman starts uh starts her
00:30:30.780 --> 00:30:33.982
cycle you should be taught to to do
00:30:34.063 --> 00:30:35.943
self breast exams every month
00:30:36.604 --> 00:30:37.003
Right.
00:30:37.203 --> 00:30:40.425
So so it just becomes a so it
00:30:40.445 --> 00:30:41.707
becomes routine.
00:30:42.047 --> 00:30:44.749
And so she becomes so that a young
00:30:44.788 --> 00:30:47.369
woman can become aware of when something
00:30:47.410 --> 00:30:48.810
has changed in her breasts.
00:30:48.830 --> 00:30:50.751
Because if you're checking every month and
00:30:50.771 --> 00:30:52.814
you finally realize, oh,
00:30:53.233 --> 00:30:55.974
that wasn't there before.
00:30:56.796 --> 00:30:58.517
And then you can get that followed up.
00:30:59.127 --> 00:30:59.528
Yeah,
00:30:59.548 --> 00:31:01.068
because you look on the Internet like I'm
00:31:01.108 --> 00:31:03.630
searching this is like around age twenty
00:31:03.670 --> 00:31:04.190
or whatnot.
00:31:04.250 --> 00:31:05.330
But like you said,
00:31:05.490 --> 00:31:07.310
at what age we should start,
00:31:07.351 --> 00:31:10.212
because the earlier intervention is the
00:31:10.252 --> 00:31:10.732
best way.
00:31:10.752 --> 00:31:13.054
And if we start having those conversations
00:31:13.574 --> 00:31:15.154
as we're teaching literacy,
00:31:15.595 --> 00:31:17.394
we should be teaching about your wellness.
00:31:17.715 --> 00:31:19.375
We're talking about puberty and we're
00:31:19.395 --> 00:31:21.156
talking about the changes that happen,
00:31:21.497 --> 00:31:22.758
especially as a teenager.
00:31:23.038 --> 00:31:24.538
Then maybe we should start incorporating
00:31:24.557 --> 00:31:24.718
that.
00:31:24.738 --> 00:31:28.539
So then we can ward off that fear.
00:31:29.096 --> 00:31:31.557
that's preventing people from not knowing.
00:31:31.737 --> 00:31:33.759
Because I mean, even with our men,
00:31:33.798 --> 00:31:37.240
men get breast cancer.
00:31:37.279 --> 00:31:39.301
And according to the stats on your website
00:31:39.321 --> 00:31:41.722
on survivorlegacyinc.com,
00:31:41.883 --> 00:31:43.523
it talks about the number of men and
00:31:43.584 --> 00:31:47.385
women who walk around and they don't know.
00:31:47.885 --> 00:31:49.487
And you can't change what you don't
00:31:49.527 --> 00:31:50.146
acknowledge.
00:31:50.508 --> 00:31:53.769
And we can't advocate for you and support
00:31:53.788 --> 00:31:55.410
you if we don't even know where to
00:31:55.430 --> 00:31:55.871
begin.
00:31:56.010 --> 00:31:58.392
So I know it's scary.
00:31:59.207 --> 00:32:01.469
I know it's scary, but what is it?
00:32:01.528 --> 00:32:03.089
An ounce of prevention is a pound of
00:32:03.130 --> 00:32:07.532
cure.
00:32:07.553 --> 00:32:09.474
I went to a seminar two weeks ago
00:32:09.555 --> 00:32:12.436
and they were talking about how soon we
00:32:12.457 --> 00:32:13.377
should start checking.
00:32:13.417 --> 00:32:15.558
And one of the oncologists that was there,
00:32:15.578 --> 00:32:18.401
she said is immediately as a child gets
00:32:18.441 --> 00:32:19.382
to adolescence,
00:32:19.741 --> 00:32:21.903
they should start getting educated and
00:32:22.003 --> 00:32:23.765
what it is to check their body to
00:32:23.904 --> 00:32:24.405
understand.
00:32:24.445 --> 00:32:26.207
And that goes for boys and girls.
00:32:26.227 --> 00:32:26.788
Oh, that's good.
00:32:26.968 --> 00:32:28.669
That's really good.
00:32:29.021 --> 00:32:29.221
You know,
00:32:29.241 --> 00:32:30.442
one of the questions I want to ask,
00:32:30.501 --> 00:32:31.721
I know we're believers.
00:32:32.222 --> 00:32:34.603
What is the scripture that helped carry
00:32:34.623 --> 00:32:35.163
you through?
00:32:36.303 --> 00:32:37.363
If you don't mind sharing.
00:32:38.364 --> 00:32:39.023
For me,
00:32:39.483 --> 00:32:42.584
I think the scripture carried me through,
00:32:42.683 --> 00:32:44.505
but there's one thing that stood out to
00:32:44.565 --> 00:32:44.785
me,
00:32:44.825 --> 00:32:48.005
and it's that there's nothing that we go
00:32:48.045 --> 00:32:48.505
through.
00:32:48.704 --> 00:32:50.125
I can't remember what verse.
00:32:50.165 --> 00:32:52.665
You pretty much put me on the line.
00:32:52.826 --> 00:32:55.467
Okay, girl, look.
00:32:55.886 --> 00:32:57.626
But, you know, if...
00:32:58.463 --> 00:33:00.305
Christ had to go through what he went
00:33:00.365 --> 00:33:02.046
through when he came on earth.
00:33:02.307 --> 00:33:03.788
Who are us not to?
00:33:04.347 --> 00:33:08.431
And I think Chantal was my strongest force
00:33:08.471 --> 00:33:09.451
through her healing.
00:33:10.051 --> 00:33:11.992
I remember one night she had to go
00:33:12.053 --> 00:33:13.673
and do chemo the next morning because I
00:33:13.693 --> 00:33:14.914
would go to every treatment,
00:33:15.015 --> 00:33:16.195
every doctor's appointment.
00:33:16.256 --> 00:33:16.996
I was there.
00:33:17.656 --> 00:33:19.117
And I went in her room that night
00:33:19.137 --> 00:33:19.917
and I said, Chantal,
00:33:20.038 --> 00:33:21.519
what time is your appointment tomorrow?
00:33:21.598 --> 00:33:22.799
And she was laying in her bed and
00:33:22.819 --> 00:33:23.580
she's like, oh, mom,
00:33:23.641 --> 00:33:24.480
I forgot to tell you.
00:33:24.500 --> 00:33:25.541
We're not going tomorrow.
00:33:25.582 --> 00:33:26.303
I said, why?
00:33:26.903 --> 00:33:27.502
And she said,
00:33:29.483 --> 00:33:31.305
The nurse called and said, I cannot,
00:33:31.345 --> 00:33:34.286
my heart rate was too low for me
00:33:34.326 --> 00:33:35.166
to do chemo.
00:33:35.767 --> 00:33:37.807
And it's like everything about me changed
00:33:37.827 --> 00:33:38.428
my demeanor.
00:33:38.508 --> 00:33:40.449
Normally I don't show fear because of my
00:33:40.489 --> 00:33:43.390
spirituality and to be strong for my
00:33:43.450 --> 00:33:43.750
daughter.
00:33:43.789 --> 00:33:46.351
And she said, mom, it's okay.
00:33:46.651 --> 00:33:47.592
Don't worry about it.
00:33:47.771 --> 00:33:48.571
If it's not me,
00:33:48.632 --> 00:33:50.333
then who is somebody else's mom,
00:33:50.393 --> 00:33:51.472
somebody else's daughter,
00:33:51.573 --> 00:33:52.753
somebody else's sister.
00:33:52.794 --> 00:33:53.213
Right.
00:33:53.314 --> 00:33:54.234
It's going to be okay.
00:33:54.295 --> 00:33:55.175
God got us.
00:33:55.616 --> 00:33:56.498
And that is it.
00:33:56.538 --> 00:33:57.558
So God got us.
00:33:57.618 --> 00:33:59.401
And I keep that at the forefront of
00:33:59.421 --> 00:33:59.942
my head.
00:34:00.241 --> 00:34:01.303
That whatever we go through,
00:34:01.343 --> 00:34:02.605
God is going to cover us.
00:34:02.644 --> 00:34:03.846
And he has covered us.
00:34:04.227 --> 00:34:05.228
And we're still going.
00:34:05.248 --> 00:34:06.648
And Chantel is thriving.
00:34:07.210 --> 00:34:08.251
And she's in remission,
00:34:08.271 --> 00:34:09.652
thriving and enjoying life.
00:34:11.934 --> 00:34:15.599
amen amen that's a scripture look i can't
00:34:15.639 --> 00:34:17.400
remember one off the top of my head
00:34:17.440 --> 00:34:19.623
but i always know that god got us
00:34:20.003 --> 00:34:21.684
look i don't remember scripture i just
00:34:21.724 --> 00:34:23.387
know how the world hits you when you
00:34:23.427 --> 00:34:25.409
know how it works that's you that's yours
00:34:25.608 --> 00:34:26.469
amen yeah
00:34:28.635 --> 00:34:29.536
Before we wrap up,
00:34:29.576 --> 00:34:32.177
I want to remind our listeners that on
00:34:32.358 --> 00:34:33.538
October,
00:34:33.737 --> 00:34:37.101
at Alexander park is the survivor legacy,
00:34:37.141 --> 00:34:39.101
breast and lung cancer walk.
00:34:39.541 --> 00:34:43.344
You can learn more about the organization
00:34:44.025 --> 00:34:48.387
at survivorlegacyinc.com and learn more
00:34:48.427 --> 00:34:50.048
about how to sign up for the walk.
00:34:50.128 --> 00:34:52.650
And we will also have a link to
00:34:52.710 --> 00:34:56.213
register for the five K on our website
00:34:56.494 --> 00:34:56.733
and
00:34:57.315 --> 00:35:00.518
on um with where the podcast is posted
00:35:01.099 --> 00:35:02.659
uh kat you want to ask your last
00:35:02.679 --> 00:35:05.422
question i do our very last question is
00:35:05.501 --> 00:35:07.302
we want to stop all of the negative
00:35:07.342 --> 00:35:09.184
stigma with mental health and i know you
00:35:09.224 --> 00:35:11.766
ladies are champions and survivors share
00:35:11.786 --> 00:35:14.288
with our listeners your go-to mental
00:35:14.327 --> 00:35:22.014
health practice um mom i would say
00:35:23.626 --> 00:35:28.106
to be honest, it's not, I mean,
00:35:28.146 --> 00:35:29.648
it's easier said than done because of what
00:35:29.668 --> 00:35:30.188
I went through,
00:35:30.827 --> 00:35:33.007
but not let stuff bother you anymore.
00:35:33.168 --> 00:35:36.068
Like literally certain stuff, just,
00:35:37.188 --> 00:35:37.489
you know,
00:35:37.690 --> 00:35:40.489
and then another one I would say for
00:35:40.550 --> 00:35:42.670
people at work, if you pay for,
00:35:43.391 --> 00:35:46.012
to get a therapist, I have a therapist,
00:35:46.331 --> 00:35:46.532
so.
00:35:49.333 --> 00:35:50.893
um yeah and i will text her in
00:35:50.914 --> 00:35:52.034
the heartbeat and be like i need to
00:35:52.054 --> 00:35:55.295
talk to you right she'll just put me
00:35:55.335 --> 00:35:59.536
on the schedule i have a cancellation and
00:35:59.617 --> 00:36:01.838
she'll talk me off the ledge so amen
00:36:02.597 --> 00:36:02.938
thank you
00:36:06.103 --> 00:36:06.724
For me,
00:36:07.563 --> 00:36:09.164
never think you have to carry something
00:36:09.204 --> 00:36:09.605
alone.
00:36:09.764 --> 00:36:11.365
Always have that person that you can
00:36:11.405 --> 00:36:13.085
confide in, you can talk to,
00:36:13.485 --> 00:36:14.967
you can cry on their shoulder,
00:36:15.047 --> 00:36:16.907
and you can talk to them about anything.
00:36:17.367 --> 00:36:18.168
I mean, sometimes,
00:36:18.188 --> 00:36:19.688
like to Chantel's point,
00:36:19.728 --> 00:36:21.349
sometimes our therapist is not there.
00:36:21.369 --> 00:36:22.889
And we have some therapists that never
00:36:22.929 --> 00:36:23.610
turns off.
00:36:23.949 --> 00:36:24.389
We have three,
00:36:24.409 --> 00:36:25.809
six to five days of the year.
00:36:25.989 --> 00:36:27.190
Always seek help.
00:36:27.670 --> 00:36:29.570
Always find someone that you can talk to.
00:36:29.971 --> 00:36:31.891
And again, Survivor Legacy is there.
00:36:31.931 --> 00:36:33.373
You can always call us.
00:36:33.452 --> 00:36:34.492
Amen.
00:36:35.996 --> 00:36:39.257
Thank you so much.
00:36:39.318 --> 00:36:40.278
Thanks for having us.
00:36:40.898 --> 00:36:41.800
Thank you.
00:36:42.079 --> 00:36:43.239
And to our listeners,
00:36:43.280 --> 00:36:45.141
we want to remind you to subscribe to
00:36:45.181 --> 00:36:46.882
Conversations with Karen and Kat on
00:36:46.922 --> 00:36:48.503
YouTube, Facebook, and IG,
00:36:48.864 --> 00:36:50.625
and wherever you get your podcasts.
00:36:50.885 --> 00:36:52.385
Remember that you are part of the
00:36:52.445 --> 00:36:53.407
conversations.
00:36:53.766 --> 00:36:56.068

Chantel Shorter Version
Chantel Roberts is a breast cancer survivor whose story is at the heart of Survivor Legacy. Diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer in 2023 at just 30 years old, Chantel’s journey has been one of strength, faith, and perseverance.
Before her own diagnosis, Chantel’s family experienced the loss of her cousin, Nancy, who passed away from cancer at age 39, leaving behind two young children. During Chantel’s treatment journey, a conversation with her mother about honoring Nancy’s memory led Chantel to suggest the name Survivor Legacy, a name that reflects the love, impact, and legacy carried forward by those touched by cancer.
Even while undergoing treatment, Chantel continued to move forward with determination. She earned her master’s degree and closed on her first home just five days after her double mastectomy. Today, she uses her voice and experience to encourage others, raise awareness, and remind those facing cancer that they are not alone.
